Dell Announces Two Mid-range Android Phones

The cheaper one disappoints with its resistive screen, but the other one surprises with its!

Computer manufacturer Dell has already made its foray into the mobile phone space with the Dell Streak - a device that we imagine must've been created as a truce for a war between their mobile and tablet development teams. Today, they're coming out with two saner-looking phones; the XCD28 (or the ZTE Racer) and the XCD35 (a.k.a ZTE Blade). The former has a wallet-friendly price tag of Rs. 10,990. The specs read what a typical mid-range Android would be like - 600 MHz processor, 3.2 mega-pixel camera, 3G, Wi-fi et al. Before you start fascinating about the XCD28 as your next phone purchase, allow us to take your desire and stamp it over and over after we throw it on the floor. This phone has a 2.8-inch QVGA (and that's not the bad part), resistive screen. Yes, the non-finger optimized, meant-to-be-used-with-a-stylus technology from the previous decade still makes its way into the XCD28. In comparison, you've got the Samsung Galaxy 5 that has a capacitive screen, sells for Rs. 2,000 cheaper with the only demotion of a 2 mega-pixel camera. We'd trade the crappier camera for that finger-friendly screen any day.

But the more mature XCD35 is another story altogether. The most striking feature has to be the iPhone-sized 3.5-inch capacitive screen with a graciously high 800 x 480 pixel resolution. Other than that, the specs aren't that different from the XCD28. The official price is quoted at Rs. 16,990, but if they can get it to that magical Rs. 15,000 figure, then this does seem like a very sweet deal. With that kind of screen on-board, it will surely blow low-resolution plagued phones like the HTC Wildfire out of the stratosphere! The only weak link that we could foretell is the kinda-low 3.2 mega-pixel camera. We can't wait to get our hands on this one.

I dont know if I'm the only one with this issue, but I actually preferred the stylus-based input of my earlier HTC windows mobile to the much touted 'finger friendly' feature of Androids (my current one is an HTC Wildfire). Perhaps the relatively smaller (3.2") screen on the Wildfire is to blame, but I rarely manage to complete a sentence without my finger having landed on the wrong key. Never used to happen with the WinMo. Not to mention the capability to doodle a note in a hurry.

you are right. I have one Samsung wave in July and when my Htc (Windows Mobile) got broken this month, I bought a Samsung galaxy 3 (android). Both want finger instead of stylus but not as user friendly as the stylus of windows mobile. In terms of user friendliness also windows mobile is far ahead of Android or Bada OS(Samsung wave) in most of the cases. I do not understand these cheering of Iphone or Android and denouncing of Windows Mobile and Blackberry. Are there other marketing interests?

Does this one has front facing camera for video calls, if not its not worth a penny in 3G life where Video calls cost hardly 3 Rupees/min

I totally agree. Most andriod based phones launched, costing even upto 20K are without secondary camera. If 3G is going to be next hit, isnt video calling going to drive it? Most non-tech savvy Indians who dont surf much on Internet would still be interested in video calling feature. What is the market strategy of all mobile companies I dont understand. Seriously!! What are the mobile operators lauching 3G for?? just faster internet surfing? What we need is 3G enabled phones which can make video calls. And surf internet smoothly. Dats it :)

Is the new DELL XCD35 actually the ZTE Blade/Tactile Smartphone? Although Dell did not mention it at the launch, comparing their specs reveals that these are the same ZTE branded phones sold in Europe. For example, the ZTE Blade has the same 3.5-inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen as the new Dell XCD35 and it is ZTE's second Android phone for the French market. It doesn't matter if it's the ZTE Racer/Blade if Dell is willing to provide top-notch after-sales service for these products. Lack of service will be a deal-breaker for me., as is often the case in OEM phones.
