It was about time. As promised, Tata DoCoMo has launched 3G Life services in India. It's the first privately held company to launch 3G services in the country. We are just a few days away from getting faster mobile web on the 3G supporting devices such as mobile phones, tablets and even USB data cards. Tata DoCoMo's 3G Life services will include applications like Video-SMS, Video-Streaming, Mobile Television, Ultra-High-Speed Data Transfers, Route-Finder, Live Aarti, and much more. Tata DoCoMo 3G Life services along with tariffs would be available from November 5.
Tata Teleservices will simultaneously launch its 3G services in all the nine circles where it has the 3G license-Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh-Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, UP (West), Punjab, Haryana and Maharashtra.
Tata DoCoMo has named its 3G services as 3G Life and also set up a special website for it - www.3glife.com. The Tata DoCoMo HSPA+ 3G Network that has been set up with the assistance of NTT DoCoMo. This network supports high-speed Internet access with speeds of up to 21.1 Mbps. Also, the support for high-definition voice (HD Voice) for a superior voice experience on calls exists.
Tata DoCoMo's 3G Life services would be compatible only with select mobile handsets that are listed here. Oh yes, the list does include Apple iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS models to be supported with 3G Life services.
Progressively, NTT DoCoMo will bring to India the various 3G products and services that will give Tata DoCoMo customers a flavor of tomorrow. NTT DoCoMo is closely working with TTL on future technologies like Long-Term Evolution (LTE) and others.
MTNL and BSNL already have been testing 3G in India but only in select circles. Bharti Airtel plans to launch 3G services before the end of 2010 and Vodafone Essar is eyeing a launch in the January-March 2011 quarter.
If I buy a 3G compatible handset that doubles up as a modem (that can be used for laptop) - is it fair enough to say that once number portability kicks in, I can shift from GSM to Tata's 3G service or any other or perhaps stay with the same service provider and shift to 3G service ?? Also does 3G allow normal calls - just being sure !!?
