Amongst the myriad of portable hard drives available today, seldom do we get a product that is designed to turn heads. Hitachi LifeStudio Mobile Plus 500GB is one such drive that we recently received for review. While it is certainly a looker, it does not mean that it compromises on functionality.

It comes with a generous 500GB capacity, a dock to plug it in and if that was not enough, there is a USB key with 4GB capacity thrown into the kitty for additional storage and better portability. As should be standard with large capacity drives, it comes with LifeStudio backup software which provides online storage too.

Bundle

  • Hitachi LifeStudio Mobile Plus 500 GB
  • 4GB MicroSD USB Key
  • USB Dock
  • USB 2.0 cable
  • USB 2.0 Y-cable
  • Quick Start Guide

While the drive can work well with any PC with a USB 2.0 port, there always is a chance that it may not work because of insufficient power. Therefore, it comes with a Y-type USB cable that provides it extra power in such a situation. The dock also has an additional power connector and can be used with a separately purchased power cable.

Most portable drive makers do not provide any software disc these days, instead opting to put the software on the drive itself. While this is not such a bad idea, there is a chance of ignorant users accidentally deleting the software from the drive without backing it up. On the Hitachi LifeStudio Mobile Plus 500 GB the software is provided on a virtual drive built in conjunction with the USB controller of the drive. You can always download the software from the website in case of an upgrade.

What about the after-sales service. If you check on consumercomplaints.in you will open your eyes to Hitachi's famous after-sales service, then decide whether you want a good looking product which lasts as long as the warranty and then pay through your nose for service - they charged me Rs 7,100 for refilling the gas in their fridge when LG charge Rs 700 for the same service. When I put in a complaint to their MD, he did not even care to reply to me.
