Still doesn't break Firefox 3's record of 8.3 million downloads
Just two days after the release of Internet Explorer 9 Beta, the browser has been downloaded over 2 million times by users across the globe. Microsoft adds that Internet Explorer 8, in comparison, saw "only" 1.3 million downloads in its first two days of arrival.
Roger Capriotti, a product management lead on the IE team, in a blog post added that Microsoft's "Beauty of the Web" was able to attract over 2 million visitors and garner 26 million page views. While these claims are yet to be ascertained by web metric analysts, the considerable interest generated at the time of the launch does make it seem that these numbers could be realistic.
While these numbers might sound impressive, it's pertinent to note that IE's competitors have, in the past, managed to rake in much larger numbers during their launches. For example, back in 2008, when Firefox 3.0 was launched, Mozilla claimed it was downloaded by more than 8.3 million times. In 2009, the next iteration of the browser managed over 2 million downloads on the very first day.
That said, if you still haven't checked out Internet Explorer 9, do take a look at our review of the same and decide whether it's worth a look or not!
I don't remember Firefox 3 being available as a beta, I think it was the final release. Also Mozilla was promoting Firefox 3 a lot, and was actually attempting to make a record. In comparison, IE 9 is a beta, and I am sure not many were aware that it was released. In that sense IE 9's download stats do appear impressive. Anyway, I have slowly grown averse to Firefox - it continues to be a resource hog in the 4.0 beta format and both Chrome and IE 9 beta do things much better.
