On September 1, Apple launched its brand new music centric social network - Ping with much fanfare. Within 48 of its launch, Ping blew bugles of having 1 million users. Ping, a music based social network, lets you follow popular music artists as well as other users. It is freely available through the freshly introduced iTunes 10.

With the launch of Ping, Apple is said to have taken a dig on online social services like Last.fm and MySpace. However, do note that Ping is not available to users of India, Croatia, Chile and several other countries. This is pretty similar to how Apple hasn't made iTunes Store and App Store available to certain countries. It's quite shocking for a free social network not made available in all countries across the globe.

Lot of users complained about Ping's unavailability at the Apple Support Forums on this thread. That's where Last.fm and MySpace continue to rule. Apple's Ping social network might have the best of the features from popular social networks like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace but it lags behind in terms of availability.

Apple has been known for blowing trumpets about the milestones hit by its services. Ping has loads of international artists on board and is totally counting on that for attracting a larger audience. However, there's no word about whether Ping would be ever made available in countries where it isn't visible yet.
