40 percent voters say they would prefer buying a phone with good multimedia capability
While Apple has been busy releasing its new generation of iPods, the iPod touch has been a device that can pretty much do more than half the tasks an iPhone can, at a third of the cost. But we've also got other phones that have big screens, have a good amount of internal storage, and come with good audio and video playback capability.
This made us wonder whether buying a separate media player actually makes any sense. Techtree put forth a question to its readers asking them if they would buy an iPod Touch over a phone like the iPhone.
At the time of publishing this article, a good 40 percent responded that buying an iPod Touch does not make sense, since there are very capable media phones that one can buy. And they come in all shapes and sizes; right from the petite Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini pro to the monster-screened Samsung Galaxy S.
38 percent of respondents said they would buy an iPod Touch over an iPhone because it is cheaper or gives better value for money. However, 22 percent of voters said they would buy one simply because they don't want to drain their phone's battery for entertainment purposes.
Techtree reader Joy Chakraborty from Pune writes, "Between the iPhone and iPod touch, the iPod is a sweeter deal. It saves your phone battery; you never know when you will need it. Most importantly, when you have the Touch your phone doesn't have to slow down when you install many apps on it."

For people who believe buying iPod touch is redundant, I ask them to use an iPod touch for a week. After one week these will be the same people who will be praising Apple. Yes, I agree buying a high performance phone and an iPod touch is useless since it will be just a waste of money.
The best combination would be to buy a mid-level phone and iPod touch.
i pod touch's audio quality can only be rivalled by Cowon (some say its audiophile standard). The i pod touch however slightly suffers from lack of FLAC and DivX support. For Example, B & W sells their "Society of sound" branded music as FLAC and also makes THE BESTi pod Dock out there (B&W Zeppelin - the Audio Engine A5s are the next best) which is a lsight let down in completeness. I pod Touch is an awesome product with room to Kibutzz. Generally for people listening to indy pop, Bollywood and Hip Hop any player would do. But Audiophiles who listen to properly recorded (anlogue) Indian Classical, Hindustani, Jazz, world, blues, western classical and Classic Rock would pick an Ipod (touch or classic). BTW apple has their own lossless format as well so you can rip your cds to ALAC (extension is the same ".aac")
ahhh i thought there always was a market for touch despite the overwhelming number or multimedia phones........looks like a lot of y'all think so too !! love ipod touch .... i could have a saved a little more and got me an i phone but i jst love the idea of an ipod touch .... a separate device purely for entertainment. The i tunes is what makes ALL the difference
Personally, I am a sucker for convergence devices. So, I'd like my phone to be my audio/video player, my camera, my internet device and my portable gaming console at the same time. Probably that Android-running Sony Ericsson PSP phone that had surfaced some time back will finally quench my thirst. And if this thing can last me for one single day without entirely discharging, I really wouldn't mind charging everyday.
But I agree that if you're gymming, running or doing any form of exercise, carrying a chunky phone in the pocket isn't really happening. In that case, that new generation iPod Nano will do just fine :)
If you have the iPhone, a very important thing to consider as far as your purchasing options go would be a cheap reliable hand gun, for emptying your dysfunctional brain onto it's gimped screen.
Alternatively, you may consider purchasing some altoids or chewing gum for keeping your mouth lubricated and ready for Jobs' throbbing penis.
In many states, both options would be cheaper than an iPod touch; this is moot because the price you pay for overhyped apps for each device will far overshadow the financial raping you took in overpaying for the shiny logo.
If you have the money and need a Phone, there is nothing better than an IPhone. However, the IPod touch is a better alternative for those on a budget. You can buy a good multimedia phone(Walkman series under 10k) with the money you save
I would prefer to buy a dedicated music player over a full featured mobile phone since they are known to be far better performers than any of the phones available out there (like the iPhone or the Samsung Galaxy). However, there may be some brands like Sony which produce even better quality devices than the Apple devices in terms of performance. The iPhone is a sure no-no !
i appreciate innovations from apple....but its their strategy for fooling people by releasing updated versions(hardware) every year....
Indian public are not gizmoholic.... Intially people like and use product, but after some months, one get boared with it.... gadgets are good for western culture where there is no social culture-communication....
Like Bobby below, my children all have iPod Touches. I have a iPhone. We travel alot and having backup entertainment for 3 children under 10 is crucial. Our iPods are the 64Gb versions and I fill them with noggin type shows and pixar films. Usage is about 90% video and 10% apps. My only complaints are the codec constraints and 3.5 inch screen. Gimme 4.3 inches.
i like having a simple phone that can be recharged every 3-4 days. i like having the touch for all the rest. i got 2nd generation. it is still so good, i think i might wait for 5th generation to replace it :) as for having 2 separate devices? it's actually better some time not having to carry such an expensive device like the iphone 4 to everywhere i go (like the gym for example).
No, I don't think so.
With Retina display, Led Flash, iOS 4.1 with Game Center, Facetime with front camera. wow, OMG, just thinking to buy a new one!
The Game Center really stunned me, can't wait to experience it! you know Im a totally ipod tunch games fanboy, have collected many games
online!!! like this: ifunia/ipod-column/free-ipod-touch-games
It plays Music and it is a Phone, It has a Front Facing Camera, Led Flash and is a Tablet at the same time.
JUST MAGICAL!
iPods and iPhones both have the same problems - clearly over-priced and they give Apple a pipeline into the user's wallet. There are other, better media players. There are other, better phones (with better internal antenna systems). There are other, better small computing devices.
Frankly, the only thing that is superior about an iPod or an iPhone is the Apple marketing that is reminiscent of P.T. Barnum in its ability to pull suckers in...
The reason I own an iPod Touch (and many people I know own any iPod product without phone features, is because in my region, Southeast Wyoming, there is no AT&T provider. Thus, I can't get phone service and iPod like music playback on any one device. There is only service from Verizon and regional businesses. The Droid has been the first "legit" smartphone people in this area have had access to. And its still increasingly difficult to have good network data service, making many of these new phones weak, anyway.
If you have a smart phone then sure, the iPod touch makes little sense. I prefer a cheap phone right now, so it makes a lot of sense. Plus, I'm a mean parent, not allowing my kids to have their own phones - but they do have iPod touches loaded with educational games.
@partho - sounds like you have hate issues.. chill
I will buy the iPod Touch 4G - soon! I already own a Galaxy S, but I want an iPod simply for 3 reasons - iTunes, which is the BEST music manager out there (get an iPod and try syncing songs based on last played - its amazing!) The second is the apps. You can't buy paid app for android in India and the android games are a pale shadow of iPhone ones. Android, till 2.2, only allowed apps to be installed on the phone storage - Galaxy S has 2 GB of that, but Nexus and Desire etc have just 512 MB. On the other hands, I have a game on my 2G iPod Touch (Settlers) that takes 600 MB of storage once installed. The third are the accessories - for e.g. I have a radio out for the iPod that allows me to listen to music in my car. So its the ultimate multimedia device for me :)
anything from apple is redundant.
anything from apple is expensive.
anything from apple forces you to jail break, thus apple indulges in criminalization.
anything from apple is a big waste of money.
anything from apple is like make a prior appointment with your doctor.
conclusion : An apple a day, doctor's clinic that way.
stay away from apple, there OS sucks, andriod/maemo/meego/openmoko as a matter of fact? windows phones and tools are better. stay away from apple.
I just saw the new lineup and asked myself the same thing. The adavantage of an Touch is as you said
a ) battery life set aside for music, videos, apps
and
b) not being chained to a 7 year contract with AT&T (which feels more like indentured servitude). In a way, it's liberating having a throw-away cheapy cell phone.
if you have an iPhone, then an iPod touch would be totally redundant. actually, having even a moderately high performance phone AND an iPod is redundant and a waste of space.
Reason being is that you will pack more hardware into your pockets or purses which is a neusance. the initial purpose of the iPhone is to replace the need for extra gadgets and put them all on one device. the only problem the iPhone has is battery.
