iPod nano

The iPod nano's design has more or less been the same ever since it was launched. They may not look identical but it has always looked like a slimmed down iPod classic. This year, however, Apple gave the nano its biggest design change ever.

Enter the touch screen. Yes, the multi-touch, capacitive touch screen has finally made its way into the cheaper iPods and the nano is the first and perhaps the only iPod to get it. Since the click wheel is gone, the nano is much smaller than before, 46 percent smaller and 42 percent lighter to be precise. All you see in the front now is the 1.54-inch display with a resolution of 240 x 240 pixels. The new nano is now closer than ever to matching the definition of its name.

On the top of the nano you will find the sleep/wake and volume buttons, and on the bottom is the dock connector and the earphone jack. On the back is a clip, so you can attach it to your shirt or bag. Visually, the new nano looks almost exactly like the shuffle, except it has a touchscreen instead of buttons and a dock connector.

The interface of the new nano is based on the iOS devices. You will see four icons at a time on the screen and to see more you need to swipe left. To get back you swipe right and to jump to the first screen you press and hold anywhere on the screen. You can rearrange the icons on the screen any time. Just press and hold on the icons until it jiggles and then move it to wherever you want. You can also rotate the orientation of the display by just using your two fingers on the screen and doing a twisting gesture. I wonder why one has to do this manually though; why can't the accelerometer do it on its own?

When you go into the music playback screen, you will see that the album art takes the entire screen in the background. On the front you will see the track info on the top, the playback buttons in the middle. To get more options such as repeat, shuffle or Genius, just swipe left on the screen to get them.

The new iPod nano comes with a built-in FM radio (with Live Pause) and can also display photos. However, due to the smaller display size video playback is no longer an option. This is a major omission compared to the previous generation model, which cannot playback video but also record it using its built-in camera.

Other features include shake to shuffle and a pedometer for fitness freaks as well as support for the Nike + iPod Sport Kit. The new nano will be available in six colors, plus a (PRODUCT) RED version, available exclusively through the iTunes Store. The battery life is rated at 24 hours for audio playback, which is the same as the previous generation models. The new nano will be sold in two capacities, 8GB and 16GB for Rs. 10,700 and Rs. 12,700.

The Good:

  • Really small
  • Multi-touch display
  • Interface looks well designed
  • Built-in clip
  • Only iPod to have built-in FM radio

The Bad:

  • The screen looks bit too small
  • No more video recording and playback

I bought the new ipod touch as soon as it went on sale, and have been playing with it for a couple of weeks. The screen is not as nice as the iphone 4's screen, but it still looks absolutely amazing. It's incredibly sharp and the colors are extremely vivid. Its nice that Apple added a microphone, I have been using the Skype app to make calls, and it can be used just like a normal phone if you are in WiFi range. The front camera is not much use at the moment, because you can only video chat with other iphone 4 and new ipod touch users. And yes, the device is crazy thin. I just wish Apple would make the back of the ipod touch out of something other than shiny chrome. The back of mine is scratched already.

I know. What I meant is that the iPod nano is the only model in the current line-up to have an FM radio. Please understand the meaning before commenting.

the screen of the nano doesn't change with the accelerometer probably coz being so damn small..the device will tend to move about a bit..it wud be irritating and also resource consuming to have the screen changing orientation every now and then

Have you even touched the latest iPods that you talk about it so much? I doubt so. Reading techtree is like reading a rehashed version of Engadget+Gizmodo. A rehashed ghati version of it. No wonder its run by UTV.

I suppose you missed the class where they teach you the difference between an "overview" and a "hands-on" or a "review". All that is in this article is a description of the features, which is something that you can do regardless of whether or not you have used the device. But perhaps you were in too much of a hurry to pass your judgment to realize that.

Oh, so have you touched these iPods, then? I doubt so,too. Reading your post is like reading the scrawlings of a retarded mongol. A rehashed more dumba$$ version of it. Quit trolling and get a life. Nobody's forcing you to read techtree's posts. LOSER.

I wonder what you had in your mind when you posted this comment? Oh, were you getting late to catch up you flight that you posted this in such a hurry? I don't think you even read this thing. It's NOT a review, it's an OVERVIEW. The writer has just told you about the features of the new iPods and the changes made, I don't know why it would need touching the iDevices. Do you need to drive a BMW just to tell it has got a steering wheel in it and hey it also has seats to sit on? Wow.. You, sir, are an uninformed idiot. I can't even see if this guy reported anything wrong coz I myself watched the event live on my iPod so wonder why you bashing it. And oh, if you think techtree= engadget + giz, then why not you start up your tech blog? It's free! Give it a try. I am no techtree fanboy but if it can give some nice info, I would read it.

We need to learn to not feed trolls on the web. Seen this on so many sites, especially by my countrymen. Its kind of embarrassing. 1 flame comment is enough.

What is this Techtree? You are almost behaving like Apple fanboys here. The flip-flop on iPod Shuffle calls for a more insightful remark. Last year, Steve Job says he got the iPod small as an AA battery and you go clap-clap, this year he says the old desgin is back and you go clap-clap. Maybe you can put in somewhere that last year's Shuffle's design was horrible, which is why Apple went back to their old design.

Am surprised to see the author reacting in that tone here. I think as author you could have just told him the thing more plainly. As an author you need to have confidence in what you wrote, your fans can take care of all the comments other than those requesting for more info.
