The Drive
The XL2000 has an unusually curvaceous casing made of black polymer and seems to be quite strong. There are gaps along the sides, which serve not only as ventilation vents but also attach the drive to the stand to keep it in an upright position.
The far ends of the drive are flat with one end having the Hitachi name, which gets lit up by an LED behind it when the drive is in use. The other end of the drive is also flat and has a mini-USB port and a socket for connecting the power supply plug. There is no power button on the drive, which would have made it convenient and safer to disconnect the drive from the computer. Also missing is a backup button, which is expected on a drive as large as this.
The drive boasts of a 2TB capacity, which is large enough to backup several computers and to store huge amount of data. It comes preformatted with FAT32 for compatibility with Windows as well as the Mac OS. But if you want to carry a file larger than 4 GB then you need to format it to NTFS. As you can see, the reported capacity of the drive in Windows Explorer Properties is 1.81 GB. There is a single hard drive inside the enclosure and it is the Hitachi Deskstar 7K2000 (HDS722020ALA330) 2TB, 7,200 RPM hard drive with 32 MB cache.
Software
The drive comes bundled with ArcSoft TotalMedia Backup that can take care of your backup needs along with Sync functionality. The thing that irked us about this software was during its installation. It installs Ask.com toolbar in your browser unless you specifically deselect this during the installation.
