Poor Apple, I sometimes can't help but feel sorry for them. They spend millions of dollars to experiment with an idea that many initially criticize as being crazy. But of many such experiments are few that give birth to their next big thing. Some say Apple had started working on the iPhone as early as 2003. And what launched in 2007 changed the entire cellphone industry. Apple improved that mediocre experience of what stylus-based touchscreens were, to something as smooth as the iOS interface used in tandem with a capacitive touchscreen.

And then, the rest of the world started ripping it off. So many things popularized by the iPhone, like the multi-touch pinch-to-zoom gestures or a centralized third party application ecosystem, which we know as the 'App Store', is now simply mimicked on so many other non-Apple phones. As of today, it's a competition between an army of Android phones and just two versions of the iPhone (3GS and iPhone 4).

Apple tried to defy the odds again this year. The last working iteration of Tablet computers we'd seen before were either tilting-screen laptops and a very few true tablet devices running Windows and dependent on stylus input. As expected, the experience rendered from these devices did not really appeal to the common man, thus they always remained a niche segment. Apple simply applied the logic behind their successful iPod Touch and delivered the iPad. Despite initial skepticism, we're seeing that its proliferation is at least much better than tablet devices before it.

Again, just like before, Apple went for the kill and now the scavengers have come to feast on the share of the Tablet pie. We saw many a tablets cropping up with Android OS on the inside. Some even boasted of much higher features than the iPad like 1080p video playback, thanks to the NVIDIA Tegra 2 chip. All the other things missing from the iPad like a camera, SD card slot, USB ports etc. had also been covered by some devices like these.

But none of them have been able to top the finesse and the mass acceptance that the iPad has received. Now, big players like Samsung are entering the playing field. We got a brief hands-on of the device recently. It's a 7-inch tablet running Android 2.2.

So is Samsung's Galaxy Tab going to be that one device that will give Apple the jitters? We believe there are five strong points where the Galaxy Tab will prove superior to the iPad.

Does Galaxy Tab also work as a phone or not. If this is true than it will be the best and the coolest thing I have come across.

You do realize that there were many tablets shown (but not yet sold) months before the iPad was even shown. And I'm not talking about the laptop tablets. I'm talking about the same form factor as the iPad. I'm talking about WePad, Notion Ink's Adam etc. None of these companies are big enough to be able to make the same kind of investment or generate the hype by a fawning press that Apple does. So I expect the mainstream not to know about them. But I do expect tech writers to do that. So when you say that Apple has spent millions to experiment with an idea, while true, does disservice to the guys who really put everything on the line and innovated *BEFORE* Apple did. And if the Samsung Tab is anything like their Galaxy S phones, it will be better than the iPad just as the phones are significantly better in almost all respects than than iPhone 4

I have never in my life witnessed a company whose products are been imitated as much as Apple. Unbelievable....

Apple in the recent years has been a game-changer. They have spotted opportunities in already available products and built upon them to offer a whole new product and have opened a new segment each time. Other companies have only tried to overcome the shortcomings(which are in plenty). However, these will not impact the sales of the IPad as Apple products cater to a niche segment of loyalists. Also, Apple has believed in what is called "curated computing" which delivers a limited but easy to use computing environment. Thus, Apples competitors not only have to delver better hardware on a better price point but also offer a better user experience

Apple has consistently ripped off ideas, from a windows based operating system, to a tablet form factor. I'm not so sure where the blogger here is going with this article. @techie BTW, samsung makes your precious iphone/ipad cpu. It's amazing to see the people saying non-factual statements here. Just look up all the patent lawsuits against apple. There's a ton of them, and apple doesn't care about them today... they just keep stealing ideas and misinforming their lemmings.

What drugs are you on. It is the opposite. MS copies everything, from the crapbox 360 to Windows itself to mobile OS.

Yeah dude Apple copies Widnows all the time, that's why Windows 7 looks nothing like Mac OS X. And PC don't have mice, USB ports, FireWire Ports nor DVD drives (all of which were popularized by Apple computers.) Yeah dude Apple is always trailing Microsoft when it comes to innovation. That's why Windows based Tablets from 10 years ago sold millions and are very popular now. Windows OS Rules!!!!

He didn't say Apple ripped off Windows. He said Apple ripped off a windows based operating system. That's correct. Apple did rip off their windows based operating system from Xerox. OS X was ripped off of BSD Unix Apple is just really good at taking other people's ideas, and polishing them up and making them highly usable. Nothing wrong with that. But to think that Apple came up with these ideas is naive. Microsoft is just like Apple, except they rip off ideas and make them as clunky and hard to use as possible.

I'm not saying these technologies were invented by apple. But one has to admit that Apple made things like the use of a capacitive screen in a phone and the other gestures like multi-touch popular, and the rest of the companies have simply adopted a similar way of working.

Come on guys, what Apple has invented? They just assemble the parts available from the other big companies like Samsung, LG etc and put in a good looking panel. Of course, the software is their own, but do think for a minute if the product is worth the price. You are buying an ipad for 500$ and you it doesnt even have a USB port? Apple knows the marketing strategies. Even if they put an Apple logo over a 100$ device available in market now and sell it for 500$, the fanboys will always buy it. And, people who said Flash is dying, please check the advertisements in the right side of the page, dont you find that its made using Flash? For the iSheeps, whatever Apple leaves out are outdated and dying. God save the fanboys.

Invention starts with an idea and Apple has some of the best. Their designs are the best and that is why everyone has been copying them. iPhone, now iPad. Don't get me started how great OS X is over Microbloat.

Yeah because we need a USB port, right...? because we live in 1998, right? lol... in the year 2010 (the future) theres going to be a new invention called Wi-Fi and with this new technology you can access files without cables nor flash drives... say good bye to those pesky little drives and access files remotely. but that's in the distant future I guess we'll have to wait and stick with our cds and DVDs, USB drives and cables because we in the 20th century love to carry all that stuff in our bags.

How many times does Apple have to have amazing success with an innovative product before people realize the plain truth. Great products aren't created by committees, opinion polls, clever advertising or marketing tricks. They're created by visionaries, in this case Steve Jobs. This is an unsettling fact for most people since that's not a talent you can advertise for, train in or sometimes even recognize without the naked truth of impressive sales. This is a painful truth for most people, but it does no good to deny it.

Looks like Samsung and so many other tablet makers are making the biggest mistake of a 16:9 device instead of a 4:3 device. Apple got it correct right out of the box, so it surprises me that so many others are missing this. This is a deal-breaker for any tablet. 16:9 is only good for the movie use-case. But totally misses the e-book, magazine, and other use-cases. If you use a tablet for primarily movies and nothing else, then 16:9 is fine. But if you have other use cases, 4:3 is the superior dimension.

We are starting to see the new generation of personal communication devices that will span several various and different sources. Next year should be a great year to acquire a 'gotta-have' new tablet.

Great that Flash is there. Reviews of Flash 10.1 for mobile aren't good, so I don't consider that a plus. How's the battery life on this thing?

good article, but there are a couple of corrections you should make. Neither pinch-to-zoom nor central-app-store were unique to apple. In fact other products with these features pre-dated the iphone by a considerable margin - the microsoft surface had beautiful pinch-to-zoon and the danger sidekick had an app store years before apple. as with almost all of its products/features, apple didnt do anything unique here, but rather put already existing technology and features into a very slick well designed package and marketed it flawlessly to generate a mass market hit.

I cannot believe that these copy cats like Samsung and LG will be able to compete with Apple or any other innovative company. Samsung is a hardware company who can only copy the ideas from Apple and others. They cannot create anything new!!!

There is only one competitor to Apple that has the staying power and that is Google. However, even they lack what Apple has and that is presence. If you have ever visited an Apple store you will see the magic that keeps the momentum going. The sales group and technicians are friendly, ready to help and the store feels happy. Add a solid, reliable product to the mix and you have what people think and probably do need for their specific use. Remember, there are die hard skeptics that have jumped on the Apple band wagon. Hospitals, businesses, schools and the family living room are presenting to the world what people have wanted and got. The price isn't the object, it is the ease and magic of moving your fingers to create a piece of art on the screen and across the internet. Give it up skeptics, your time has past!

What are you guys talking about its not marketing that sells a company. In this case its the better product which does what needs to happen. From what I can see fact for fact when compared to the ipad this appears to be a superior product in just about all ways. I don't go on wings and a prayer that the ipad will get flash or flash will just disappear. Flash is the universal way things on presented on every website out at the moment. Now HTML 5 thats so new that not even most browsers let alone websites use it. Hate to say it but there are no copy cats here there are just those who think beyond what apple is up to, to the future.

Mark my words....without Apples marketing genius, this device will sink beneath the waves, never to be seen again. The iPad with a camera is bound to come soon, and Flash is going to disappear as well, to be replaced by HTML5. Watch and see. This device will be the Betamax of Tablets....technically superior in some ways to the iPad, but alas, never a competitor

Personally, I hate Samsung's lack of business ethics. It is much worse than just copying someone's product. No Samsung products in my household. I will gladly pay a premium for a true original.
