    Sony Ericsson Zylo

Prasad Naik, Aug 27, 2010 1558 hrs IST

A good phone but certainly not a music phone that it claims to be

Good design, sturdy build, good display quality, comfortable keypad, smooth interface, good battery life, FLAC format support, good web browser, ability to pause and run multiple Java applications

No 3.5mm headphone jack, poor quality supplied headset, average camera quality, sluggish media player interface, no GPS

The Zylo is Sony Ericsson's latest Walkman phone. It comes with a 2.6-inch QVGA display, 3.2 megapixel camera and HSDPA connectivity. It is also the first and only Sony Ericsson handset to support the lossless FLAC format. We tested it to see how good a phone it is and more importantly how good a Walkman phone it is.

Bundle

  • Sony Ericsson Zylo
  • Battery
  • Charger
  • Stereo Headset
  • USB data Cable
  • 2GB microSD card
  • User Guide

The Zylo's bundle does not include a data cable and a memory card, which is ridiculous for a music phone. Where am I supposed to keep all those massive FLAC files? And even if I buy a memory card, how am I supposed to transfer it without a data cable? Besides, the Zylo does not even have a standard USB port, so I can't use my current cables. So now I have to buy a Sony Ericsson data cable or a card reader as well? That's just ridiculous.

Update: We have been informed by Sony Ericsson that the retail package of Zylo indeed comes with a USB data cable and a 2GB microSD card in the package.

The screen on my phone goes whenever I slide it up..It would be okay if I could get into it, but I need to enter two codes, which I know, but in order to do that, I need to slide it up. I have texts which I need to see, so the only way I can read them is through the screen!! I just need to know how to take off the codes, so I can get there without a screen, then turn off the phone, and be able to read my texts! Please, anyone help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i bought a sony ericson w20i / zylo on 22.08.2010 from mobile store . i barely used it for a month before bit by bit da entire phone stopped functioning even though it was handled with utmost care( never dropped etc). first the outgoin voice could not be heard , the slide stopped functioning , after few hours display also stopped workin. i took it to the service centre in next day. i was told that the strip is spoilt and strips not available and will be available only next week.also this seemed to be a common problem with the phone . for the past one month i visited the kochi service centre thrice, till now strip is unavailable. sony ericson service kerala is pathetic. spares are not available, even after complainin spares are not made available. it is really sad that after buyin such an expensive phone i was not even able to use it for a month. also wat use is the so called warranty if no action is taken.

The omission of the 3.5 mm jack was what angered me the most. So far, the Zylo was the only phone I've encountered in my limited experience that supports the FLAC format. I have a lot of loss less FLAC music on my laptop and was happy to see this pleasant looking retro styled phone supporting it- now I had a portable solution to listen to my hi-def audio. Imagine my anger and disappointment in seeing that it didn't have a standard 3.5mm jack. OK, most of the sundry people are fine with SE's headsets. But this one, being targeted at audiophiles- it's a sacrilege. I'm supposed to listen to the nuances of Tommy Iommi's guitar riffs through this cheapsh*t earphones they've provided?? All audiophiles use 3rd party cans- not the stock crap that comes with the phone. Where am I supposed to plug in my Monster Turbines? Through a lossy adapter? Hello?! The whole point of FLAC was for loss-less audio experience. By using the adapter, one effectively negates the whole loss-less audio thing. Sure, you can buy good SE headsets like HPM-80 etc. but in NO WAY they come close to delivering the audio quality a Monster Turbine or Etymotic or Klipsch earphones does. Add to the insult that no memory card is provided. A FLAC file is BIG-trust me. A single song can go up to anywhere from 20 mb to 50 mb. An album can come close to 400-500 mb. And no data cables? WHAT WERE THEY THINKING? LOSERS. One of the BIGGEST disappointments I've seen this year. The lack of one single SOLITARY feature has doomed this handset and made it the laughing stock among the audiophiles. They'll laugh about this for years to come.

Dude I'm not trying to diss you but Monster Turbines? You should have gone Shure or Etymotic. ER6i are one of the safest bet for sub $100 bucks. Monster are one of Americas'most over hyping company. Even for HDMI cables you're MUCH better off with monoprice cables.

It's okay- my bro has a pair of Ultimate Ears UE-11 PRO-s- so for mobile listening I bought the Monsters I like their design- even though it's way too heavy o the basses. Besides, I have a pair of Sennheisser HD-650-s and Klipsch Image S4-s. Just typed the name of the newest earphones I'd bought.... sorry. Btw, I didn't know you could get Etymotic in India.. I do all my personal audio shopping from abroad... better prices there... Know any dealer in South India who stocks Etymotic? I wish to try them out.

Does it have support for themes? And is the homescreen customizable?

SE phones have supported themes since a long time and this phone is no different. Check your facts before posting rubbish

I am using SE devices for a long time & I am a huge fan of them. But you should know that some of them don't support themes. And lastly my question was to reviewer & not to you.

by the way dude, who told you that using 3.5 mm adaptor results in a loss? Its ultimately the audio output power of the phone which drives your headphones. And the audiophile grade headphones normally requires more than the normal output power to be driven properly...

Using a 3.5mm jack adaptor from the FastPort does result in a loss of audio quality. It's an audiophile taboo, man. Check out the readings around the net. You can notice it if you have really good ears, too. And I was talking about in-ears- not circumaural headphones.
