Two good options to build a high-end gaming PC, while keeping the price under check

Finally we come to the end of our PC buying guide for this quarter with this article on building a high-end PC. Unlike most people we haven't gone too crazy with the components and have built these machines trying to keep the cost down as much as possible. We've once again built two systems, one with AMD and the other with Intel, so let's check them out.

Option 1

The only major change in our first high-end rig is the graphics card. We chose the ZOTAC GTX470 since it's priced the same as the HD5870 and it does offer better DX11 performance. We've also swapped our 22" monitor for a BenQ 24-incher. Since it's a high-end gaming rig, a regular mouse just wouldn't do, so we've brought in our trusty MX518 to the rescue. Finally, the sound department too gets a bit of an upgrade with the AltecLancing VS4121 speaker system that delivers thundering bass.

MSI P55A-GD65 Motherboard is not sli ready, MSI P55A-GD65 has two PCI Express x16 slots using this configuration. They support CrossFireX, but not SLI. MSI P55A-GD85 support both technologies. I almost died a little when i found your mistake..

Instead of gtx 470 u can use hd 5850 which gives about the same performance at a lesser price. Also, then u can upgrade the mobo and if possible the case.

or better still use a gtx 460 1gb edition which gives more than playable fps playing good games at high setting on a 1920x1080 res (what more can one want)...

Does the motherboard in the first config support sli/crossfire?

Nope, MSI 880GMA-E45 doesn't support SLI and CrossfireX. It has only one PCI-Ex16 slot. Its better to opt for 790GX AM3 mobos which cost ~5-6k now if u want CrossfireX. If 890GX then u can opt for the MSI 890GXM-G65~7.3k

Zotac GTS250 1GB DDR3 or Zotac GTX460 768MB DDR5 or Zotac GTX460 1GB DDR5.

i dont understand why u didnt go for amd x6 1090 with a custom cpu coller. seriously u spend 20 k extra on intel config, and you could go for a good mother board like gigabyte and stuff. still pretty decent config,

The PSU that u have chosen is of low quality and also the cabinet lacks cable management. I would choose the Corsair VX550 and the CM 690 if one chooses to go with the GTX470. This GPU consumes loads of power and produces a lot of heat. PSU seems a very poor choice for a 60k+ rig. As a thumb rule u should allot ~8-10% of the PC budget for the PSU.

Thanks for the heads up. I've changed the PSU but i think i'll leave the cabinet the same as the budget is going through the roof ;P

Agreed that there is the budget constraint for the sub 70k rig but at least opt for a better cabby for the SLI config with the TX650. U would have loads of wires to manage. Almost all reviews have onely one thing to cringe about the Elite 430 and thats the cable mgmt. The CM 690 costs about ~ 4.5k and would perfectly complement the 80k build.

What a blunder mistake!! In Option 1, the image shows "ZOTAC GTX 470" on the other hand you wrote below "The only major change in our first high-end rig is the graphics card. We chose the ZOTAC GTX460 " in your article's text.
