Wink e-book Reader on Croma Shelves by Sept. 1

Touts Kindle-like hardware and reading material of Indian origin and languages

    mail share

Yesterday, at a press conference in Mumbai, Bangalore-based EC Media launched "Wink", which they proclaimed is "India's first e-book reader". Well, in the beginning of this year we'd heard of an Indian-origin e-book reader already, but oh well. Then, there's always the Amazon Kindle that supports delivery to a 100 countries (India included). But custom duties have to be bourne and books have to be purchased in dollars.

EC Media is trying to capture the Indian reader's grasp by selling a device that can be picked up from a local electronic store. They've partnered with Croma, a biggie Indian electronics chain, for this. They also have apparently solved another key piece of the puzzle -- the content. Their PR sheet claims to have more than 2,00,000 titles as well as newspapers, magazines and journals that you can buy in Indian rupees. Check their store to see if they have your favorites. Their repository will also have books written in Indian languages. To start with, they've populated it with Hindi, Marathi among a few other languages. They said soon they will get content from all Indian languages onto the Wink. Books will generally sell for 50 to 75 percent of the cost of a paperback. So for voracious readers, this device could spell a considerable saving in the long run.

The Wink XTS model will start selling on September 1 for Rs. 11,500. It has a 6-inch screen that shows content using e-ink technology, just like the Kindle. The e-ink display emulates the appearance of an actual printed book. It is not backlit like an LCD display on the iPad. So you'll need light to read, just like you would to read a book. The display looked fairly readable indoors; I tried reading under sunlight and it actually looked better. The device is just 11mm thin and weighs as much as a Sidney Sheldon novel. Another good thing about the e-ink display is its low power consumption. On fully charging its 1500 mAh battery, it can run for 300 hours continuously, which is great.

It has 2GB built-in memory and has an SD card slot for expansion. A 3.5mm ear-phone jack and a miniUSB port lie at the bottom of the device. Yes, you can also use it like an MP3 player. The USB cable can be used for charging or for transferring books to the device from a computer. The XTS model on display supports Wi-Fi, while the X3G model supports Wi-Fi and 3G (it sells for Rs. 15,000). An array of formats are supported by the device including TXT, RTF, PDF, DOC, HTML. A QWERTY keyboard underneath lets you input stuff like Memos or search for words within a book. There's also a mail client if you want to use it to send/receive e-mails.

While using the Wink, I felt the build quality to be slightly plasticky. In my usage, the interface had a noticeable lag that didn't make me feel too good. The QWERTY keys aren't the best to type on, and fast typing resulted in missing characters from time to time. Anybody with a typing speed of above 10-15 words per minute will find this irritating. Hopefully, the version that sells in stores will have taken care of these niggles.

The Wink will sell for Rs. 11,500 in India. However, 12 grand for an e-reader is going to be out of the reach of the common Indian man; and will rather be a buy for the upper-market audience. It is two and a half times cheaper than another "pro-reading" device; the Apple iPad. But again, it isn't an fair comparison since the iPad does much more than just displaying books.

Would you buy an e-book reader like this? Or would you still buy printed copies? Cast your vote in the opinion poll to the right.

If cheapest tablet can cost $35, why has a device which reads only books has to cost so much? I agree that it has e-ink technology. Still, cost is cut due to lack of other functions. Even a good smartphone costs almost the same.

an ebook reader like this should cost between rs. 7000 t Rs. 10000/- max. 11500 is too steep with just reader functionality. had it been with either functions like colour display touch screen audio/video/photo/movie capability, the price would have been justified maybe a little higher.... but with current features and pricing its not going to get much popular.

It "could" be a cheap China device modified for Indian languages , In China you get these kind of stuff for 4000 to 5000 or less ,what ppl do is rebrand it and sell for higher margin!

Just check their website and see at what prices they are seeling the ebooks. In India printed books are I think the cheapest in the world. For some books in the site I found them to be priced more than the print edition :O The only objective of my buying ebook reader would be portability and cheaper price of ebooks to print editions.Even if they gove it away for 2k I would think twice before buying this stuff.

Why do you need an answer to the Kindle when you can buy the Kindle itself at a much cheaper price? And it is of a much better quality too with many more features, better contrast, faster page turns and also has cheaper books.

Seems very expensive. From the other comments I realize that the kindle is just $140, this would be a better buy that the wink Surprising the writer made no mention of the prices of competing products. Anyway good Indian companies are coming up with such devices, maybe someday they will be competitive in terms of price & feature & then you can buy an Indian product itself. Based on this article I will now checkout a kindle?

The device is a one-time spend - the other price comparison needed is for titles. Compare 1. e-books in rupees vs. 2. e-books in USD from Apple or B&N vs. 3. paper books in rupees. Books in India are cheaper than elsewhere in the world - so if price is the big criterion, factor that in. The other big criteria are availability of titles and convenience...

Dunno ... but how many bestsellers will be supported by the Wink. Atleast Amazon and B&N have all of them .... its just a matter of time that the biggies will be aware of the big indian market .... then let there be price war!!

This is really great news Indian companies are also coming up with electronics products which was not expected. But it is expected if any product will be launched in the market then it has to b superior than its rival so that it could get a recognition in the market. It again looks like another typical Indian product will a lot of issues in it. I could suggest AT LEAST they should make a copy of the already existing products of recognized recognized brands like Amazon/Apple and float their product into Indian market with lesser price. I hope in this scenario they could achieve some recognition and could help them in brand building. Its a good move but primarily it looks like not worth to buy.

Too costly ... waiting for the day for sub 5k e-book readers. These are costly. Wish Tata enters into the market .... they will surely cater to the common man :)

Tata reader will probably catch fire or belch out smoke like their sumos, nanos and indicas. Nothing great about tata products, just that they are cheap and badly finished.
Sam
,Delhi, on Aug 21, 2010 07:18 PM
Why so infuriated over Tata Products? How many nanos u heard burning ... probably 1. Others are also of the same parity. Just Tata is an indian product ... the foreign MNCs try to blemish its image. What about Toyota or the Macs or the IPhone4 ... all suffered setbacks. I am waiting for Tata to enter the market.
geo
,bangalore, on Aug 22, 2010 10:42 AM
@ sam, infuriated because I have owned Tata products, and worked in tata companies. I have nothing against indian products, just that we tend to focus more on selling more and making money than actually paying attention to the finish or quality. of course, these are not relevant for every product, just some of them

Rather buy the B&N Nook and get it shipped to India. That will still work out cheaper than this. This looks like a shitty copy of the Kindle.

I'm using a SOLONOMI Apad / Irobot which was sourced from singapore for about US$100/- (5000/-Rupees approx) and it has 7" screen, Android, WIFI etc. I can browse internet on this and it acts as a full document reader/editor, all thanks to Android. Who do we think gonna go ahead and buy such an Ebook reader which is low on specs and the manufacturing cost should be somewhere around 1000/-Rupees. Remember "INFIBEAM Pi", the failed Ebook reader from Infibeam. It failed because of Overpricing. I'll not buy such a device evn if they price it below 2000/-Rupees. Gadgets are getting converged because of the sake of portability. I do not need a standalone bulky ebook reader which I can not carry around.

is it in black and white : without any color displays...like in a newspaper...! Its appriciated only the Rich ones who have money to spend, have to buy this product. Its not advisable for a man who have less money to invest in it.

last decades, it was the music industry which was complaining. This decade, it will be the publishing industry. Cheap Mp3 players have fueled music piracy. Ebook readers will do the same - make piracy easier. And then, we will have law enforcement agencies running after book pirates. One should not forget that these publishing companies are powerful. Harper Collins is owned by the News Corporation, everyone knows how big Penguin is. Cheap E-Book readers will bring a new wave of knowledge. People don't usually read two hundred pages of text on their computer screens.

I've used the infibeam Pi for a long time and it wasn't too sturdy, this looks cheap from the snaps and at 11,500 it is definitely too expensive. I ordered a Sony e-reader 650 from a US website on the Internet and even after paying duty it cost me less than 10K. Do we really have to tolerate bad quality products marketed by opportunists who are capitalizing on lack of competition in the Indian market and overpricing their shoddy wares?

Guys the Amazon Kindle is now priced at $139 = Rs. 6500 and Sony ebook reader for $140. They slashed their price of the digital readers loooooong bak.... the wink at 11.5k is ridiculous.
Saurabh

It will fail because only a person who has never heard about the Kindle 3 or Sony Ereaders will buy it. Even after shipping and customs, the Kindle 3 is much cheaper than this device. And this device even doesn't have the features of the Kindle 3. I can only speculate about the build quality because I have never seen the wink in person, but I sure can bet it is not better than the Kindle. @Those people suggesting an iPad or similar TFT-LCD device: EBook readers are supposed to replace the hard books, not portable computers. If you are going to read for more than 4-6 hours a day, you definitely need an eBOOK READER because an LCD screen is going to really strain the eyes. I also believe that EC-Media is doing the same mistake that infibeam did-They are underestimating the importance of pricing the product right. They are trying to sell a feature less, inferior product for a very high price just because they don't have competition. But they are forgetting that amazon ships to India. The shipping cost is 20$ and the customs is 40$ out of which around 20$ is refunded in a couple of months. It is still much cheaper than the Wink.

With kindle wifi @$139 and the new sony reader @$99 (in Sears store in USA), it is overpriced. I expect these other readers also be able to read Indian languages. Wink cant compete on price. They can perhaps try a rental business with monthly charge incl content.

Well, when the first cell phones, computers etc were launched, people said that it was out of the reach of the common man. :) Innovation is expensive and monetizing it involves a certain element of risk. Devices such as these are always targeted at early adopters and when volumes pick up, costs come down and more accessible. That is how the market works whether you like it or not. :) Hear that EC Media is coming out with a low cost aam janta devices, so lets see.

Over priced with respect to features when compared with other global e-readers such as Kindle Next Gen, Sony eReader, Nook and Kobo REader. If it is an genuine Indian product then the price slab should be around 5000 - 8000.

why don't the companies which bring such products understand the consumers mindset? - consumers (Indian in general, Global in general) wants to buy such gadgets for satisfying more than one need. Yes, they (including me) want to own something to read e-books / newspapers but may also need to look into favorite photos, want to run favorite videos or browse Internet, get connected via social net-working sites, check emails, peep into word or excel docs and at times may want to play light games. -why should they invest 11-15 k on this for one reason? why not 25k-35k on devise like i pad which is capable of satisfying multiple needs? - It would be better if tech companies try to convert net-books & low-budget note-books into i-pad like device with less price.

This is very expensive comparative to Kindle. Kindle's wifi version is only 139 and wifi+3g is 189. I am sure kindly will surely down atleast 20-30 bucks by holiday season this winter. Wink is surely on higher price range.
