On August 19, Sony Ericsson announced four new handsets for the Indian market. We were there for the event and managed to get a hands-on with each of the new phones that were announced. Here is a brief account of our experience.

X8

The X8 is Sony Ericsson's mid-range Android handset that is pegged between the X10 mini and the bigger X10. It features a 3.0" 320 x 480 resolution capacitive touchscreen display, 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, HSDPA, Wi-Fi and GPS and runs on Android 1.6 Donut.

The phone looks a lot like the X10 mini; just that it appears as if someone has stretched the mini to fit the bigger display. The display, however, isn't that big and I feel it could have been a bit larger. The touch response was excellent though, just like on the X10 mini.

The overall design and build is good. However, the phone does not look as good as the X10 or the X10 mini. The display looks small and the phone has a slight dull and bland look to it. I hope Sony Ericsson will launch more color options, particularly a black one.

The speed of the interface was just as snappy as on the X10 mini. Even though the 600 MHz processor might not seem much on paper, it performed well in real life.

One of the issues with the small display is that typing becomes a pain. On the X10 mini Sony Ericsson used a standard multi tap keypad with predictive text input for assistance. On the X8 they have used the standard Android QWERTY keypad, which feels cramped on the 3.0" display.

Apart from this the X8 is nearly identical to the X10 in almost every aspect. However, I do wonder why Sony Ericsson dropped the camera on the X8 to 3.2 megapixel from the 5 megapixel on the X10 mini. The X8 will be priced less than Rs. 16,000 when it launches this quartet by the end of September or early October.
