Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Mini Pro

Rohan Naravane, Aug 19, 2010 1537 hrs IST

That oddly cute Android phone gets a deserving QWERTY keyboard, thus making it lot more usable

Tactile QWERTY keyboard, Compact design, responsive UI, Good audio via bundled in-earphones, Good 5MP camera, Impressive feature-set (Wi-fi, GPS, 3.5G)

Tiny low-resolution screen isn't ideal for power use, Old version of Android (1.6), A bit heavy

We recently tested the XPERIA X10 Mini, which struck to us as an odd-ball handset amongst the incrementally populating mid-level Android phone range. Although we appreciated many a things about that phone, from a functional point of view, the X10 Mini fell short due to one major reason -- the screen size. Everything from web-browsing to reading mails to typing on that non-QWERTY num-pad wasn't as ideal as other big-screened Android phones in that range.

In the end, the X10 mini felt like plane with a high-power engine inside that has its wings clipped to make it look pretty. We were eagerly waiting for its slide-out QWERTY wielding cousin, the X10 mini Pro to resurrect this downer feeling of ours. And today we have it in hand. Let's check out the good and bad of that QWERTY board addition.

Note: Since the X10 mini and Mini Pro are identical internally and similar looking externally, we will only cover the differences between the two. To know in-depth about the phone, I'd suggest you read the previous review before hand.

Major Differences in Design:

Overall, both the phones are almost similar looking. Despite the addition of the sliding QWERTY mechanism, Sony Ericsson claims that the thickness of the Mini Pro has gone up by just 1 millimeter. But when placed next to each other, the Mini Pro seems about 3 millimeter thicker. When held in hand, it does feel bulkier too due to the increase in weight by almost 30 grams. But the phone is still pretty petite when compared to 3-inch+ touchscreen phones of today. The QWERTY part has a kick-slide mechanism that pops out as soon as you apply little pressure to the sides. The durability of the slide feels firm.

Let's get down right to it -- the QWERTY keyboard was the magical unicorn I was hoping it to be for this phone. Although the keys may seem tiny, they are tactile, well-spaced and arranged quite smartly. The 4-row key structure has that perfect amount of length and not too much width that reduces thumb movement. It was intuitive to type on them from the first moment onwards. All the characters that you'd need day-to-day are placed at the right spots. I also appreciate the left and right arrow keys on either sides of the space-bar, which will be helpful while moving the cursor on screen. The symbol key brings up lesser-used characters along with a good collection of smileys. It was a good experience to have long Gtalk conversations on the QWERTY, and then falling back on the on-screen num-pad while using the phone single-handed. Bottom line: Two thumbs up to the keyboard.

Another thing I liked was restoring the ear-piece to the center position like most phones. The X10 Mini had the ear-piece towards the left end which made you adjust the position while holding it to your ear at times. You won't face that problem with the Mini Pro. Removing the battery cover now reveals a removable battery which is another welcome addition. The battery power is lower by about 20 mAh than the X10 Mini's non-removable one. However, unlike the mini, the Mini Pro does not get any multi-colored back covers to match your clothing.

hi roshan, as per my concern, mini pro will be better option than vivaz as vivaz got Symbian OS, where as the mini pro has the Anroid OS, which we found in the iphone. beside that, the camera clarity is very good.

Hi friends, What is the current market price of xperia x10 mini pro? Hi All & experts, I'm a fan of SE, have used W-series earlier also, and I really appreciate it. Now I'm planning to go for Xperia X10 mini pro. I have read all those pros & cons about it, still can you plz help me answer these queries: 1. Is now android 2.1 available in mini-pro? as they were to launch 2.1 in mini-pro in India. 2. I use music a lot, how would be on battery, if I listen app 2 hrs everyday? 3. I have no idea ab service centers of SE, (frankly I dint require it for my SE for >2 yrs). How ab it? Thanks !!!

service centers are the Best for SE. They wl charge u for any software updates. Batry wil not last long more than 5 for ur type of usage. I use only for talking and if i use for potos, cam, & music then the batry wl go of in 30 min. Thats the onlyprob and I am feeling like thowing it off at that time.Inspite of updaeing the software paying 150 rupees it remains the same . Its like a good body without soul. sksankar narayanan

I intend to sell my 5 months old, black Nokia E71. The device is in perfectly sane condition, without any scratches and the only reason to sell, is that I am very much keen on getting an Android handset. E71 needs no introduction, it has been awarded quite a few accolades (refer wikipedia page) and is considered among the most successful business fones, this side of BB stable. Highlights: Nokia email client, lets you configure upto 10 e-mail accounts in simple 3 or 4 steps. GPS with navigation. Youtube app. Pre installed, along with lot others. The device sure looks class, with its 10mm profile and metal battery cover. Details as follows: DOP: 4th July, 2010 Purchase price: INR 12,800 Current price: a shade under that, maybe a few hundreds less. Box pack with all OEM accessories (charger, leather sling, cover, CD ROM, manual, etc) available along with original bill. Selling price: INR 10,500 (Not negotiable) 9880691326

Try to reduce the brightness meter a little lower, if it is set to full. This should give you the required boost. Also, search for 'Juice Defender' in the Android market

I bought X10 mini pro two days back. Its better in performance, looks and "experience" than any other phone in the same range. A well composed handset for people who adore beauty and style. Camera quality is awesome and the Flash works in darkest of the environment to add to the clarity. Touch screen is as responsive as a human touch. The phone shows no signs of lagging even in the levels of extreme usage. And yeah, the phone does everything possible to keep you updated with social networks in the easiest of the ways. But due to smaller screen size(which I consider a plus-point in terms of handiness) you cannot depend totally on the phone for internet surfing. In other words, it is an alternative but not at all a replacement for your current large screen wi-fi handsets. And of course, those who believe that a large screen is a prerequisite for a rich-looking phone should rather buy anything else but not this phone. The next thing I found ecstatic was the music playback which remains undoubtedly awesome and even better than previous sony phones. The phone has a one-touch power management widget which lets you control your connectivity to facilitate best battery backup. Besides, it also shows the amount of battery being used by various applications so that you can manually compromise the phone power . Overall, with limited expenditure plan, if you believe in being different and stylish at the same time you will never regret buying this phone. However, if you are addicted diving in those large screen plates, mini is not for you. For any other enquiry/information/suggestions about this phone, ping me on twitter @_Apoyando

Am palnning to buy a new Phone around 13 to 16K. Which one is prefereable to go with. Sony Ercison phones [XPERIA X10 Mini or others] or Nokia Phones[5800 or E72]. Do help me in this regard by giving your valuable suggestions...

I have always been a Nokia fan so I would suggest E72. Again if you want a phone high on style and avg on performance then go for Mini Pro. E72 and Xperia has 5MP. E72 is all round phone and is better than any other phone in that range. (that my opinion)

If you want a QWERTY phone that I've got to say that the X10 Mini Pro would be a better choice than the Nokia E72. Not that the E72 is a bad model, but I just feel that the X10 Mini Pro trumps it over a few counts like a slightly bigger touch-screen display, android OS, spaced out keyboard, better camera and sound.

x10 mini pro without a second thought. 5800/e72 stand nowhere near it. (however only under chances that your preference is towards a business phone I'd suggest something of the type e72)

Recently the X10 mini got the EISA(European Imaging and Sound Association) award for the best phone in Europe for 2010-2011, beating all the biggies with iOS4s, latest version of Androids, 4+ inches of screens and crappy Finnish products. X10 mini itself was a small wonder by itself and now with a qwerty keyboard its iceing on the cake. I just love the X10 mini twins. Will be getting one soon

@ Nitish.......its a review not a aricle ..... @others........i found a spica in a store ..... some1 plzzz tell me whether is should buy galaxy 3 or spica ........are there or will there be enough apps n games 4 qvga resolution any time soon ???
Rohan
,TechTree, on Aug 20, 2010 01:45 PM
@natasha and @Nitish, nobody can speculate whether support for QVGA will increase soon or not, since it remains to be at the hands of the developer. But I will say this, since cheaper Android phones with QVGA displays are touted to flood the market, I have faith that app support will come to those phones with time.

HTC 'sensual'...ROTFL. Guys its 'Sense' not 'Sensual' (quite a name for an OS skin). You people have a lot of scope for improvement.
