HTC has announced the launch of the much awaited Desire in India earlier today. The company has tied up with Tata DoCoMo to launch the phone here.

The Desire is HTC's version of Google's Nexus One albeit with a few changes. The phone appeared at the Mobile World Congress 2010 and has taken a while to reach the Indian shores. Although you might be aware of the specs, here's a run down of the same again.

The Desire boasts of the same 3.7-inch AMOLED display found on the Nexus One. The processor too is the same - a 1-GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon. While the Nexus One runs the stock version of Android, The Desire comes with HTC's Sense UI. The Desire also comes loaded with Android 2.1 and is yet to get an update to Froyo unlike its sibling, the Nexus One. The Desire also gets slightly more RAM than the Nexus One - it has 576MB of RAM as opposed to the Nexus One's 512MB. Other changes include video recording at WVGA resolution (800*480) at 15 fps versus the Nexus Ones D1 (720*480) at 20 fps. HTC Desire also gets an optical track-pad and physical buttons. For Indian users, FM radio is of great importance - which is why the Desire comes with one - unlike the Nexus One which has given the feature a miss.

The rest of the features including the 5 megapixel camera and the support for multi touch gestures remain the same as on the Nexus One.

For Tata DoCoMo post paid users, the phone comes with an exclusive offer that allows users to download 500 MB of data per month for free, for a period of 6 months. To avail this offer, Tata DOCOMO customers will have to SMS 'Android' to 54321 from their HTC Desire.

The new HTC Desire will be available starting today at a Market Operating Price (MOP) of Rs. 28,900 at all authorized HTC resellers across the country.

Does anyone get AMOLED screen for HTC Desire in Indian store. In pune, only SLDC screen models are available?

Forget any of us Man....the company HTC itself has not been able to get their hands on SuperAMOLED! :-P All their phones will sport only SLCD until SuerAMOLED becomes available. That will be when Samsung will no longer be able to produce any Galaxy S's!!!

purchased the desire finally..total cost 30k... gave away my 5800 ex music for 6k and retained the 8gb memory card that came along with 5800, so thats another 1k...so net cost of my desire is around 23k, which looks a good bargain for me....

Checked up availability and pricing of Desire in chennai...no one except a small retailer named vasavi, said the phone is available..rest of them totally unsure of when it would come. price quoted was 28,900 + 4% VAT = 30,056. But he said that if no warranty was required the total cost would be at least 3,000 less. wondering whether to go for warranty or not now...any suggestions???

1)FM has no RDS 2)SMS cant be stored on microSD Card! 3)Playback on Bluetooth headset stutters 4)Apps can be installed only on internal memory. These are all basic features...What age are we living in?Just lik how mobile phone operators are levying resrictions on new phones by locking it to a particular operator....R mobile phone companies too doing the same with their handsets imposing restrictions on certain features in certain phones?

@KIRAN ... Anrorid 2.2 takes care of that "not being able to install apps on mem" ... with 2.2. you would .... same with SMS ....

Galaxy DOES NOT beat Desire as Desire hardware is far better optimized for it apps and sw, and that is the reason Desire UI navigation is far smoother that Galaxy S specially when filled with loads of widgets ......even though GS has better hardware .... google GS vs Desire and you will know

Well tats primarily coz of TouchWiz 3.0. Its neat n simple but needs a few more tweaks to be more user friendly and less lagging..U can always substitute it for another like Launcher Pro..changes the whole game ;)..Mines got Launcher Pro and it rocks..and btw i got 20+ widgets installed and 30+ sw and games installed on Galaxy S ..No lag!!..cheers!

Main problem with desire is, limited storage space for apps ( ~170MB). Many android app's size ranges 3~4 MB , similar for widgets. So calculate the number of apps u can install . [There are massive apps also like 10-12MB]. Until Froyo update rolls out, desire will not be of much use.

True, not yet on the website! Even tried calling a few retailers in Chennai - Univercell, Poorvika, Wavetel and Vasavi.....only Vasavi already has it and that too for a price of 29,900! Poorvika said it expects to have by the end of this week but are not sure of the price. Univercell has no idea as to when it would come. :(

compared to the galaxy s the hardware is not on par, the screen , processor etc.etc. but the htc sense user interface is so elegant especially the clocks and other widgets , it just gives the phone such a premium feel, for new Android users I recommend the Desire over the Galaxy s anyday, the sense user interface just looks and functions so much better.

HTC hasnt give fully hardwares features in it. and most important thing is its price is very high.....it should be less in price because other company many features in there mobiles with lesser price. Why should people go for Htc mobiles.....if company increases its features and hardwares quality, then this price will be suitable for peoples........

Akshay
,techgod, on Aug 16, 2010 06:33 PM

Because it doesn't look like a plastic toy version of an iPhone? Because Touchwiz is horrible?
Akshay
,techgod, on Aug 17, 2010 02:23 AM
Well it aint no toy!!..no offence but u gotta own one to experience one bro ;)...and for touchwiz..well tats a personal choice..i love it!...its wayy better than the older versions..and tad simpler than sense...i know coz i own both (desire as well...unlocked offocurse!!)...all in all...between these 2..galaxy s is the bigger badass!!!!

Arvind

Ya.. Galaxy is with stock Android 2.1 eclair where as Desire is with Sense UI..which makes it better ...even than Nexus One....when I integrated my phone with google and facebook...it was sense UI which collaborates with each contacts info from all related accounts into ur phonebook...which is awesome..u get live info abt ur frnds activities..even when u searching contacts to dial a number...what an Integration!! only thing i struggle with desire is battery life...every i have 2 charge it..but cant help it...coz desire needs battery for all its features 2 deliver. I bought Samsung Jet (smarter than smartphone bakwaas) 6 months back ...then gave it to my cousin...and got android...and desire is the best android phone yet !! Enjoy!

An awesome phone. I have been using it for 3 months now. Rooted it a week back and loaded Android 2.2. Works wonders. Considerable difference in speed and performance. HTC sense is a treat to the eye. Much much better than the native UI that come with Android. Go for it guys. Ota update for 2.2 should follow soon

Sigh ... when will we have phones on contract like in the UK and US. Doesnt make sense to buy phones from mobility providers at the same rate as you can find in the market.
