After an Army Colonel was arrested for his involvement in uploading child pornography
Surfing those usual porn sites in the confines of your home might put you at the wrong end of the law in the next few years if the Maharashtra Government has its way.
That's right. The state government is mulling over enacting a law banning pornographic websites in the state, reports The Times of India. As of now, it is unclear if the law simply aims to "ban" these websites (most of which are obviously out of the state's jurisdiction) or make the act of viewing such websites an illegal thing to do.
The proposal was put forth by a minister while discussing a case of child pornography in the Maharashtra legislative assembly. The case was regarding an Army Colonel who was arrested for his involvement in uploading child pornography. While the minister clarified that the government has informed the webmasters of the website to remove the clippings from the website in question, he added that the police has begun night patrolling at cyber cafes to prevent such cyber crimes. Now, we are at a loss how night patrolling at cyber cafes would prevent cyber crimes from happening.
Methods to "ban" pornography have been in effect since time immemorial now. No government has however been able to completely filter out what they think is "unwanted content". The Internet is just too big for them to be able to do that. The best the state government can do is to be tough to the perpetrators of crimes such as child pornography and chase them through scientific and technological means. We also think all matters regarding cyber crime should be entrusted to a centralised agency which has the know how to deal with such crimes and also the authority to take action against such people.
Instead of that, choosing to enact a blanket ban on porn websites is just absurd. It hasn't worked anywhere in the world and rest assured, it is never going to work here in India - much less, Maharashtra.
no doubt Maharashtra as a state is gone down the drain... i live there n i m ashamed of being in such a mismanaged state. we will join the likes of UP & Bihar soon. and someday everything will be blamed on the marathi manas... i dumbfolded by the stupidity of the masses in India, we can be taken for a ride whenever needed
