While Blu-ray is no doubt the optical storage format of the near future, Sony subsidiary, Optiarc, continues to manufacture DVD writers underlining the fact that this medium is still going strong. Netbook users have usually found themselves in a fix when there is need to use an optical disc for installing a software and more so when they need to install the complete OS due to data corruption. This is because netbooks do not have an optical drive built in them. For situations like these, there is the external optical drive that usually connects to the USB port. Sony Optiarc has launched the DRX-S77U, which is an external DVD-writer, and is a perfect solution in the above situation. The drive can read/write to single layer DVDs at 8x, while it can do so to CDs at 24x. Let us have a look at how well it performs in our test.
