HP Labs has launched a new technology called "SiteonMobile", that allows web access via SMS and voice services instead of the conventional webpage-based browsing method. The aim of this technology is to make the internet available to the masses with low-end mobile handsets.
Based on cloud-computing, it targets small and medium enterprises to deliver content and services on their website via SMS and voice. Businesses can utilize this platform to create "TaskLets" or task-based personal web interactions to ensure that only the relevant content is delivered instead of the complete web page. These TaskLets can also be accessed through PCs by clicking on corresponding widgets on the screen. As a matter of fact, the TaskLets can be accessed from any internet enabled device and from anywhere.
Director of HP Labs India, Sudhir Dixit said of the new technology, "About 54 per cent of the phones sold in India are ultra-low-end and less than three per cent are Internet enabled. There is a strong need to deliver the value of Internet experiences on low-end devices used by users in emerging markets like India."
This service is available for free at present, but enterprises may charge users for SMS and voice services once the project is fully updated. You can get more information by going to
http://www.siteonmobile.com. It follows an "invitation only" model and lets select customers to create TaskLets.
