A few years ago smartphones were a niche segment. The only smartphones that were available were super expensive and were only bought by those who were either very rich, geeks or both. Nokia was the first one to truly bring smartphones to the masses, thanks to their inexpensive Symbian based smartphones that flooded the market. No wonder that Nokia today is the largest maker of smartphones in the world.
Later Apple came and redefined the way people look at smartphones. Even though smartrphones were selling more than before, they were still considered geeky and not many people were aware of the various functions that they contained. Apple brought a simplified interface design and a unified application store where you could find all the applications for the phone in one convenient location. You now no longer had to hunt around the web as was the case with Symbian and Windows Mobile phones.
Today the smartphones market is no longer a niche segment that it once used to be and every mobile phone manufacturer worth his salt is in the business with multiple smartphones. Samsung has been in the smartphone market for a long time now and has one of the widest range of smartphones supporting nearly every operating system out there. However, recently they felt the need to come up with their own operating system, which they call 'bada'.
