A few years ago smartphones were a niche segment. The only smartphones that were available were super expensive and were only bought by those who were either very rich, geeks or both. Nokia was the first one to truly bring smartphones to the masses, thanks to their inexpensive Symbian based smartphones that flooded the market. No wonder that Nokia today is the largest maker of smartphones in the world.

Later Apple came and redefined the way people look at smartphones. Even though smartrphones were selling more than before, they were still considered geeky and not many people were aware of the various functions that they contained. Apple brought a simplified interface design and a unified application store where you could find all the applications for the phone in one convenient location. You now no longer had to hunt around the web as was the case with Symbian and Windows Mobile phones.

Today the smartphones market is no longer a niche segment that it once used to be and every mobile phone manufacturer worth his salt is in the business with multiple smartphones. Samsung has been in the smartphone market for a long time now and has one of the widest range of smartphones supporting nearly every operating system out there. However, recently they felt the need to come up with their own operating system, which they call 'bada'.

When asked about this, Samsung told us that with bada their plan was not to compete with the established smartphone operating systems out there. Instead, Samsung plans to bring the touchscreen smartphones to the masses. So soon you will see cheaper touchscreen phones from Samsung - such as the Corby and Star - running on bada.

We got our hands on a Samsung Wave, the first phone to be running the bada operating system. After spending some time with the phone, we are going to give you an in-depth look at the latest entrant in the smartphone OS segment.

However, let me tell you that we are not going to bore you with the technical details and the nitty-gritty of the operating system; you can get those from Samsung's website. We will instead focus on the description of the applications and the actual user experience that you will get while using a bada powered device.

bada os has no future.... it is as clear as a daylight.... samsung starrted rolling out android handset like galaxy3.... they wasted their money and resources on this crap...its either andriod or windows mobile7 the winner.....do u ever think htc motorola or nokia or any other smart phone makers will install bada os in their sets.....

Nice review - thanks. Is it possible on this or an Android to have customizable 'profiles', like Nokia phones have? So that say in a meeting, only certain numbers would ring and messages could be on silent etc?

I recently purchased Wave mobile phone. In contacts only names are displayed. How to get the display of both name and number. Due to lack of this provision, during a call if you want to get details of a particular contact and you go to that name thro contacts and tap, then immediately it goes dailing that contact. It is becoming difficult to give the number of a particular contact to the caller during the call. Is there any solution or the software of Wave is just this. If that is so then it is a very big inconvenience and how to go about it. Regards, Babu

'bada' Reboot! 'bada' isn't stable. I was listening to Music on Wave and launched browser within few seconds phone rebooted. For no apparent reason. Indicating 'bada' isn't ready (yet)

Samsung Wave has iPhone 4 like issue. Signal attenuation and even total loss (sometime, someplace) when you grip the antenna portion. I am using Samsung Wave for a week and half now. Be careful what you choose!

Just 12 hours of battery life that too from full charge to 0! with 'normal' use Ex. 1 hour music, 10-15 minute of browsing, couple of tweets last but not least no phone calls! This 'performance' from 1500 mAh Li-ion battery unexpected (in fact shocking). My Motorola Rokr E6 1000 mAh Li-ion battery use to last 1.5 days after really heavy use Music, browsing couple of short calls.

Y'day, I bought Samsung Wave S8500 (an impulsive purchase I must say cause My Motorola Rokr E6 is still rocking as ever ok Rokr E6 is not 3G 3MP camera, 2GB Card no spec phone as compared to S8500 but it Rocks!). Coming back to down sides of Samsung Wave S8500 first of all its damn tough to make touch screens usably intuitive (getting to options, menus in 3 or less than 3 steps that navigation guyz) I would rate S8500 2 out of 5! I am yet to see GPS, A-GPS working little disappointed with that. Browser is not good for non mobile websites (this I have seen with HTC Legend as well, But of course Motorola Milestone score in this) I am a heavy Internet user browsing, Social networking etc. so this was big let down for me! Worst Twitter client that is bundled with S8500 don't allow me to log-in not sure why But I installed Snaptu and uTweetMe which works fine but Samsung phone have these 8 button (for navigation within app) menu seating (bottom side of screen) always on 3rd party apps its ok but those button's needn't be these big! Voice Now the Up side. Music I love the equalizers in S9500, & that SRS 5.1 stuff is a pure gimmick doesn't have any effect Cool thing about music player is when I copy the Music to Memory card it automatically recognize the Albums and Tracks and list it no Syncing/Refreshing needed! On my Rockr I have to refresh the Real player to Index the Music!. Video playback is good in landscape mode. Another aspect which I want to touch upon is "pause" feature in "Voice Recording" allows you to pause the recoding it is very useful feature which I didn't find in any other phone which I came across so far. Stop that spam! Now-a-days is spam SMS, calls is big issue S8500 address this by including functionality to block SMS and calls from specified/blacklisted numbers (yet to test this feature completely) but its cool. I use "Mcleaner" a 3rd party free app on my Motorola Rokr E6 which is feature rich. All in all its a good phone to have. Now waiting for more Apps to come, I am also planning to get my hands "dirty" in Apps development for Bada!

Hi Suresh , does it really contain google maps. Bcoz nokia is offering lifetime free service for navigation on its selected phones. if google maps r present then it would be really great

Very well done review, would like to have this same standard in all your articles. There are so many spelling mistakes though. I suggest you to put at least one or more screenshots for every feature you mention. About bada, if v1.0 is this then i guess the future versions will kill all other OS, Samsung has that potential. Its my personal opinion though.

I don't know too much about Bada, but I absolutely love the Wave. I'm seriously contemplating on replacing my aging Nokia 5320 with this beaut. The device per se has absolutely no drawbacks IMO- I see the nascent stage of the OS as the only limiter. PS- The bundled games look gr8!

Android can also be used as smartphone for masses.. there is no real reason why companies should launch their own OS again and again...Already Blackberry and Palm OS sound meaningless.God help them with app.support.

Exactly. Android is based on the FREE linux platform, and google doesn't charge for the OS itself. Samsung just wants to differentiate their product. Too bad for users who could've benefitted from having the same OS on a multitude of devices. Divisions and differentiations are totally unnecessary from a user standpoint, especially with something as polished as Android is. BADA mistake on Samsung's part, IMHO.
