Putting together the best components for your entry-level PC

For those who think that building a PC is a difficult and complicated proposition, here's a guide that will help you buy the right components for your rig.

Today we'll be building a General Purpose PC and just as the name suggests it will be able to do a little bit of everything. This PC can also be upgraded in case you need more power in the future. It'll make a perfect first PC for someone not willing to invest too much or who is looking for a balanced system for movies, music, a bit of surfing, casual gaming and encoding an odd video or two. The configuration hasn't changed much from our last 'Entry-Level PC' guide but we have made a couple of tweaks to keep up with the times.

Remember, you'll have to pay a bit more for the Operating System since it depends on what you're going to use it for. You could use Win XP, Win 7 or if you aren't going to game at all, then there's always Linux.

I would have liked USB 3.0 option on the m/b.. to make it "a bit" future proof. what are the options? (availability and cost)

They're all still very costly. I guess there'll be an ASRock, Biostar, or ECS board with USB 3 & Sata 3 retailing at around 5K. Also, they're all DDR3 ONLY, which means Rs. 600 or 700 more on the budget.

Seagate drives too carry only 3 years warranty now. In fact they were the first to drop warranty to 3 years and this happends 4-5 months. Please get the facts right.

Hi Karthi, sorry for the mix up. Your right, WD still carry's 5yr's for internal whereas for external drives, its the other way around.

1. if u r going for a, xternal gfx card (4670 or the nvidia one), u need a good power supply like corsair or coolermaster 450W. 2. the logitech keyboard shortcut keys - not all of them work, unlsess u nstall another s/w. by default, mute, internet, and music player works. The music key opens the default music player, but does not start playing music. u have to do that manually by clicking the play button. 3. I agree with Karthi ,Trivandrum comment . Seagate was the first to drop to 3 yr warranty.
