Just a day after the hard hitting blog post by "Symbian Guru" Ricky Cadden which said Nokia was "losing it", the Finnish handset maker has posted a reply of sorts at its Conversations blog.
The post penned by none other than Ansii Vanjokki, the new head of Mobile Solutions at Nokia, candidly admits that Nokia is "under no illusions" that the job to ensure Nokia occupies its premier position in the future is no small task. He has promised that Nokia is on its way to simplify the way it functions and the results would be seen in the months to come.
He also asserts some facts already known to us. Things like the capability of Nokia and its R&D team as well as its ability 'to produce killer smartphones and market-changing mobile computers'.
Vanjokki seems to be very excited about the upcoming Nokia N8 - its first Symbian^3 smartphone and promises that it will come as a surprise to most users who were expecting the same old "Nokia experience" on the N8. He is also confident about MeeGo and its potential. As for future N-Series devices running on Symbian, he confirmed that while the N8 would be the last N-Series Symbian as of now, there is a very high chance of Symbian making a comeback on the N-Series when Symbian^4 arrives in 2011. In a direct reference to Ricky Cadden, he said, "We are determined to win back supporters, including Ricky, our favorite Symbian Guru."
Nokia has, in the past, always chosen to remain silent when it faced criticism like this. However, that seems to have changed and looks like the management there has now become a little more receptive to suggestions by hardcore Symbian and Nokia users. If this trend continues and Nokia does manage to bring compelling new devices in the future, there is high chance that it could regain its lost glory very soon.
If I compare Nokia with Microsoft, Symbian was the Xp of mobile worlds, and what we saw on 5800 was vista, While I am still happy with it, let us hope to se a breakthrough release next year...
Though Nokia has stuck to the legendary OS Symbian but it not dat bad experience since i m a big symbian fan ( i have used Nokia 3230, Nokia N73 and using 5800 Xpress Music). Yes i admit the fact dat there are better OS like Android & IOS 4 but with Nokia N8 entering the market it will add another feather to the cap of Nokia. As Nokia has delivered more than expected i think i can never rethink about buyin any other phone except Nokia. I expect MeeGo to be more promising than the android and IOS 4. While others are busy evolving phones Nokia has evolved with better services such OVI Music, Maps & free lifetime navigation with such intricate details....Thank U Nokia for makin my lyf easier...
The Problem with Nokia is that
- they are tied to their legacy OS, Symbian, which is simply not the latest OS around unlike Android. However players like Samsung, Motorola etc., play around with all the OS along the latest lines like android, windows and even symbian
- Even though Symbian is Open source like Android, Android has far more takes in the smart phone market, like Motorola, Samsung, LG etc., who themselves take care of popularising the Android share and apps market, unlike Symbian which Nokia has to take care to upgrade etc.,
I am not sure if Nokia continues to persist with the same old Symbian, in the future, things will not get excited for them.
However Meego platform has a huge backing in the dev community, and Nokia should already put its socks on to speeden up Meego release as a usable platform. Meego as such has the technology to supersede Android as we saw in the Nokias N900.
Symbian is not a 'legacy OS' any more than Meego is. Unix was created in the 70's for mainframes, not mobile devices. Symbian was created in the 90's for mobile devices. The problem is in Nokia's culture, which I hope is changing fast - not which OS they happen to choose. Android may be newer than either Symbian or Meego, but Nokia are not going to be using Android - and why should they? What a disgrace if a company that *truly* revolutionised mobile surrenders to using the software of a search company...
N8 specs is simply unbeatable.. hope Symbian ^ 3 will be a good OS.. but N8 shud have had xvid support and also a small led flash for using as torch. its got everythin else a phone possibly have.
All I can say to Vanjokki and Nokia users is to lay low and don't be scared of negative remarks, they are there for a good course because they make you grow instead of letting you down, one tends to do things more differently after being criticized. Nokia is number One and Connecting people all over the World.
