    Asus U45J Optimus Notebook

Roydon Cerejo, Jun 30, 2010 1627 hrs IST

A feature-rich notebook that could have been built better

Good feature set, slim design, lightweight, Optimus enabled, good battery life, good bundle

Lid is very flimsy and screen is prone to damages, feels plasticky, a bit expensive

Today we have a very interesting notebook from Asus that is going to be launched in the first week of July and is all set to change the ultraportable scene. Remember the sleek ultraportables that Asus promised us with Optimus and an Intel CULV CPUs? Well the U45J is the first slice of what's coming. We've managed to snag an early sample of their upcoming ultraportable and it's packed to the gills with features.

This variant sports a Core i5 450M running at 2.4GHz with Turbo Boost. The rest of the specs include 3GB DDR3 memory, 640GB hard drive, Nvidia Geforce 310M (1GB RAM)with Optimus, DVD burner and WiFi 802.11'n' with Bluetooth. All of this is packaged is an incredibly slim and stylish package with a lovely LED backlit 14" screen. Asus will hopefully have different SKU's, so you can choose from different price points.

If this can deliver a decent battery life then it won't be long until CULV processors will be a thing of the past and we won't have to settle for mediocre performance anymore. You'll probably still see them in low-end notebooks and netbooks though, so there's still a market for them. Next let's see what you get with notebook.

Bundle

The sample that we received only came with a charger but we were told that the retail sample will come with a bag and mouse and a one-year global warranty.

I bought Acer TimelineX 4820TG.on 26th june ...14" ...with Core i3-2.17Ghz..3Gb ram...320GB HDD...ATI 5470.512MB .....for 43k in baroda...its way better than Asus..in build quality...and pricing is also decent for the spec...only Asus has the advantage of optimus....which i think is not a big deal...as u can manually Switch graphics in Acer

Acer has very poor battery life. My friend got Dell inspiron 14R with exact same config as yours and even 1 GB memory in ATI 5470. In just 36K. And bro Asus is much better than Acer in build quality. I can say because I am using Asus k40ij for last 1 year.

'The width of the notebook is more or less the same as the Acer Timeline X notebook and it weighs also almost the same. The left side has a charging port, exhaust vent, VGA port, HDMI port, two USB ports and headphone and microphone jack.' Probably made by the same vendor. :D lol

Dude Roydon, FINALLY you did something no other reviewer has done.. experimented with the build quality, and I mean this in no sarcastic way. Honestly, if you keep up and add some originality with each of your reviews you WILL reach AnandTech level (fyi, just look at their iPhone 4 review, its pretty in-depth). One step at a time, my congratulations to you... keep up the original work.

Not what I'd expected from Asus. Screen flex??!!! I'd heard the Vaio E series has a similar issue- but nothing as bad as this! Personally I don't think the optimus tech's such a big deal. Acer's Timeline X has one model with an ATI 5650 and an i5-430 and it delivers better uptimes.
