Ban also includes SMS bases services, updates and news alerts

Following the clashes between protesters and the police, the Jammu and Kashmir Government has directed mobile operators to block SMS services across the state. This action was taken after three protesters were killed in police firing.

Kashmir, has been mired in heightened tensions since the past two days and these latest measures according to a Government official has been taken so that  "anti-national and vested interests from spreading trouble", as said to The Times of India.

This SMS ban in the rest of the state has come a day after the government had blocked all mobile services across north Kashmir. The SMS ban also includes SMS bases services, updates and news alerts.

Kashmir has, in the past too, seen similar actions by the state government. The last time SMS services were banned in the state was in 2009. Prepaid mobile services too were blocked in August 2009 for a period of two months after which they were restored.

Do you think this blanket ban on SMS services is the right thing to do on the part of the State Government- whatever be the reason? Leave us a comment and let us know.

i don't think so that sms banned by the state government is so beneficiary for the government. Those who were involve in making protests in don't think so that they are defeated by this service. The young generation of J&K especially Jammu division is now habitual of this service. How they can survive or how they contact each other especially students. If the govt. thinks that sms banned is a way to stop protest in Kasmir. Then stop this service only in kashmir division not in jammu division. Why the Jammu division people lasck of this service . What r they doing.

No, not at all. I mean how can they stop us from using what are the 'necessities' in this 21st century! And that too bcoz of a handful of anti-social elements. Put them to jail or whatever, why should we suffer bcoz of them. And rumours can be spread by usage of other means too. So, why not ban the whole communication system, all in all in J&K. Just Hate our Govt.!!!!

You loose mind crack, you did not understand the situation. During curfew, rumors will spread rapidly though SMS. it is the big weapon for separatists to pour oil in a flame. J & K government has taken the decision on time to curb the protest. Separatists dare the J&K government to maintain the law and order of the state. In addition, you said rumors could spread other means. Will you explain what those other means are? The only way to overcome the entire hurdle by J&K people is to neglect those narrow-minded separatists. Their idea is not serving people. They are using J&K people’s emotion for their power thirsty.

Blocking SMS is not a bid deal. You are still able to make calls. It is a small price to pay if it saves lives

" Put them to jail or whatever, why should we suffer bcoz of them" if that's that simple then why dont you do it? and idiot they are doing it so that you people and the whole country doesn't suffer. I message my friends 24/7. At least 200-300 messages daily, rarely make calls. But if needed, especially if anyone's safety is concerned, I wouldn't mind banning SMS. If you can't help it, then shift from Jammu. Its easier shifting for you than putting anyone in jail just coz you, sir, have ordered! ATTENTION! SALUTE TO YOU! idiot..
