Microsoft's team hasn't entirely moved its Office suite to Apple's development environment

Microsoft's Mac OS X development Team - Macintosh Business Unit attended Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference and shared a few details about upcoming Office 2011 for Mac. As per a blog post at the Office for Mac blog, the Mac version of Office 2011 would be released in 32-bit only. That clearly means that Office 2011 for Mac 64-bit version won't happen this year. First screenshots of Office 2011 were spotted earlier this year.

As Jake Hoelter, Product Unit Manager/MacBU, noted on the Office for Mac blog, Microsoft's MacBU team's work is to increase the compatibility of Office software with Mac and the transition of moving entire user interface to Cocoa environment for Mac OS X. Hence, by the time MacBU team moves Microsoft products for Mac to Cocoa entirely, users will get Office 2011 for Mac in 32-bit only.

Now this might annoy Mac users since the Snow Leopard is 64-bit version and can easily handle the 64-bit programs but Microsoft isn't ready it yet. Hoelter further explained that the major difference between 32-bit and 64-bit versions is the memory capacity available to the content. The 64-bit version can make a difference for people working with larger amounts of data like thousands of high resolution images, millions of cells in Excel spreadsheet.

The Office 2011 for Mac aims to improve compatibility, collaboration and user interface to the Mac platform. Let's see if it can compete enough with the Apple's iWork productivity suite.

I don't think Office live is cross platform... "To use Microsoft Office Live, your computer must meet one of the following requirements: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, 7, or 8 running on Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, or Windows Vista. You can download Internet Explorer from the Internet Explorer page. Mozilla Firefox running on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, or Mac OS X 10.2.x and later. You can download Firefox from the Firefox download page."

"The 64-bit version can make a difference for people working with larger amounts of data like..." "... thousands of high resolution images" -in what? Word? ...millions of cells in Excel spreadsheet." -for who? Finance pros working in Windows? ...like people who use a Windows platform.
