Nokia's Maemo 5 based tablet, the N900, was available in India via unofficial channels for quite some time now. Seeing the demand for the handset in the grey market, Nokia seems to have thought of bringing in the handset officially to India and that is exactly what it has done today.

Nokia has officially launched the N900 in India. The N900 boasts of an impressive hardware spec sheet that begins right from the processor - an ARM Cortex A8 that provides 1GB of application memory and Open GL ES 2.0 Graphics acceleration support.

The OS is Linux-based Maemo 5 that provides the device comprehensive multitasking ability. The N900 also features a WVGA touchscreen and a full, slide-out QWERTY keyboard. It comes with 32GB of memory (which really isn't an upgrade over the N97) and an expansion slot - you can add up to 48GB - which should suffice for "normal" users. With a decent 5 megapixel camera, the N900 seems to take photography seriously. All the other features you might expect find their way in as well. We're talking about the A-GPS and FM transmitter support. On the connectivity front, it supports HSPA Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity as well.

The phone will cost Rs. 30,639 in India, which is on the expensive side - but is well below the initial expected cost of the handset - which was just over Rs. 35,000. The N900 was officially launched in August 2009.

Beautiful Tablet which acts as a phone too. I mean the device has so many features to explore. Based on Linux Operating system. Almost all video formats are supported and many apps are still in development phase.

at a price of over Rs. 30,000 the 'average joe' might prefer the Blackberry for its snob value, if not for anything else. The geek might prefer the Linux flavour (Android, Maemo, etc.) smartphone.

beware of services. services and software that nokia advertise are not offered in India. in such senario you will be using a basic phone and no more, worth Rs 5000 and less

are you an idiot? do you know anything about maemo? i am a debian user. and maemo is based on debian. and i am using debian as my main OS since 2003. so "THIS IS THE" geek phone. and certainly this is not an average joe consumer phone. yes its for the geeks and by the geeks and off the geeks. and yes i waited for more than 3 years for these devices from n700, n770, n800, n810 and n900 and i havent got one. so i am still using SE 750i. but if you are a geek? then? "THIS IS THE" phone. many of my friends purchased this phone (who aint geek) werent at all impressed with this phone. and oh yeah coming to app? man i have just one liner line for you. "LEARN DEBIAN." this is arm processor, and there is a port in debian called arm and armabi. just type in shell apt-get install <program-name> and install it. and oh well. if you know debian and how to make packages and program d-i, well this is the phone. android is nice too. but this is the phone. off the box you get hash, yes #. thus my verdict? "this is a hacker's phone." this is the best dream phone a hacker can dream of. this phone can unleash the true color of a hacker at his palm. learn to hack and hacking is not password cracking and security breach. i am a hacker, and i hack, thus this is a hack of my dream. i will embrace this phone with all passion. i dont think i need any other phone, forget android. this is the phone. again no offense. if you are a linux (power/advanced & hacker) user? then this is the phone you need. heil arm, heil snapdragon, heil maemo, heil linux, Nokia thanks for a hacker friendly handset. HACKER does not mean a criminal. a hacker is a developer. check wiki for hacker.

This phone sucks, Especially with Motorola, HTC etc. Also N900 l be going for the MeeGo soon! Yes, Most of the sexy phones launched in the US are too low standards for India (atleast thats wht the manufacturers think). Its better to get a sexy phone from eBay or something. The only competition India has now is Moto Milestone & Samsung Galaxy S. PS: Dont go saying "Hey, Where's the X10", That thing is not even in the league.

android sucks to the core, there is not even proper divx player considering the fact n900 and milestone uses same chipset. maemo in n900 has proper divx support and there are lots of mods which makes milestone obsolete eg linux os based google chrome browser can be made to run in n900. btw US market is a joke to Asia/europe coz their phones are locked to one network so it's BS to make comparison

N900 is touch screen model. Definitely not for noobs. It is a mobile computer with phone capabilities. Ever heard of linux ? You might want verify your facts before posting on public forum. What do you mean by rough use ? Use it to hit nails into walls ?
