At the ongoing Computex 2010 Expo in Taipei, Taiwan, Intel has announced future microprocessor family for netbooks, nettops and tablets. New Intel Atom platform brings dual-core microprocessors for both - netbooks and nettops. While the next generation tablets based on Windows 7, Android or MeeGo operating systems will get brand new processors. Intel also showed razor-thin 14mm "Canoe Lake" platform.

As a part of the Intel "Atom Anywhere" strategy, the company has announced new dual-core Intel Atom "Pine Trail" family processors. Its arrival was confirmed last month. The new single-core Intel Atom Pine Trail chips (N455 and N475) with DDR3 support would be available for netbooks starting today. Intel didn't disclose model numbers and clock speeds of the new dual-core Pine Trail processors.

These dual-core Atom chips for netbooks are expected to offer better performance as compared to dual-core Atom Chips for desktops and help conserve battery life. Though Intel may push that these new netbook chips have been optimized for better HD (720p), one would still have to go for Broadcom's CrystalHD video decoder solution to watch 1080p HD content on netbooks. Do note that power constraints (battery life) might be one of the major reasons why Intel isn't bringing 1080p on netbooks

While for the nettops, dual-core Pine Trail D525 and D425 microprocessors for the entry level desktops would be made available from June 21.

Also, a new platform codenamed "Oak Trail" was announced for tablets and sleek netbooks. This Intel Oak Trail platform is based on the Intel Moorestown platform and will contain Lincroft System-on-Chip. Oak Trail is the upcoming System-on-Chip Intel Atom platform that will support multiple operating systems - Microsoft Windows 7, MeeGo and Google's Operating systems (Android and Chrome OS). Oak Trail will offer hardware acceleration with full 1080p HD output and will support HDMI port. Expect this Intel Atom SoC to show up on in early 2011.

Intel also displayed its brand new 14mm thin netbook prototype codenamed "Canoe Lake". This prototype will equip dual-core Intel Atom chips and will compete with current thinnest notebooks - MacBook Air and Dell Adamo XPS. Clearly, Intel is slowly pacing up to capture the ultra-thin netbooks and tablet market.
