After a decade, Apple's market value has surpassed to that of rival Microsoft
Praise it, curse it, detest it or love it - Apple has managed to overtake software giant Microsoft to become the biggest global technology company based on market value. Apple CEO Steve Jobs would be quite happy and contented to known that Apple has finally managed to reach the top. According to Wall Street's evaluation, Apple's market value is about $222.12 billion compare to Microsoft's $219.18 billion, reported The New York Times.
A decade back, Apple as a company was nearing death while Microsoft was rampaging with several products. Today, Apple shares are worth 10 times more than what they were a decade ago. Most of the profit comes from consumer electronics such as iPhone, iPod, iPod Touch, MacBook Pros, and recent iPad tablet.
Microsoft, on the other hand, earns loads of money through its operating systems (despite of being heavily pirated) and several other major products. However, when it comes to profits and sales, Microsoft still wins over Apple. Microsoft had a net income of $14.6 billion compared to $5.7 billion in the most recent fiscal years. In the latest quarter, Apple reported $13.5 billion revenue whereas Microsoft shined with $14.5 billion in revenue.
Apple continues to introduce innovative products while Microsoft struggles to improvise over its existing products with updates. However, Microsoft does have a variety of business offerings like gaming consoles, music players, and recently - smartphones.
