After a fairly long wait, the Twitter for iPhone app is finally here. Yes, it is the same Tweetie 2 app that we all know and love and is now rebranded as 'Twitter for iPhone' after Twitter acquired Tweetie, which was originally developed by Loren Brichter (@atebits on Twitter).

The new application is currently only available on the New Zealand App Store, and will soon be available for other Stores around the world (Update: Twitter for iPhone is now available on all the App Stores). Screenshots from the New Zealand Store suggest that the application is visually identical to Tweetie 2, which is not surprising since they are actually the Tweetie 2 screenshots, which they haven't bothered to update (Update: New screenshots added. Still looks the same though, except for a new icon). This is ,of course, a good thing as Tweetie 2 was one of the best looking apps on the iPhone. We are actually glad Twitter did not redesign it to look like their apps for BlackBerry or Android platforms.

Twitter for iPhone is, as promised, completely free of charge. In comparison, Tweetie 2 was priced at $2.99 on the US Store. We wouldn't be surprised that Twitter for iPhone becomes the Top App on the App Store the way Opera Mini did a while back. As far as the other Twitter apps on the Store are concerned, they are all but doomed now.
