    Pakistan Bans Facebook over Caricatures

Techtree News Staff, May 19, 2010 1600 hrs IST

Competition involving Prophet Muhammad's most blasphemous caricatures allegedly hurt sentiments

    mail share

Lahore High Court has issued an order to ban the access of popular social networking site Facebook in Pakistan for holding a contest of Prophet Muhammad's Caricatures. Chinese News Agency Xinhua reported that Judge Ejaz Ahmed Chaudhry had instructed the Ministry of Telecom to block the access of Facebook in Pakistan and submit a written reply by May 31.

Islamic Lawyers Movement had filed a petition against a competition that was about Islamic religion founder Prophet Muhammad's blasphemous caricatures on Facebook. The lawyers stressed, "The competition has hurt the sentiments of the Muslims." The Ministry of Telecom officials told the court that after the news was reported, Facebook pages showing Prophet Muhammad's blasphemous caricatures were blocked.

However, the lawyers argued that the entire website should be blocked and hence Facebook is reportedly blocked in Pakistan by Telecommunication Authority. So until a written reply is received, the website will apparently be inaccessible in Pakistan .

That goes out to Facebook, ouch!

What complete rubbish this is, the whole FB ban. The logic makes no sense. Why not just ban all books in the English language because one of them somewhere said something that you found offensive? Or hell, cancel all SMS services in PK because someone sent a text that you consider "blasphemous". As a Pakistani, I find this idiocy outrageous and unwarranted. No government should be allowed to mandate the flow of information.

If you don't have a sense how serious is this issue so just stay away from this & don't talk rubbish, i don't think you are muslim, so if you are not then don't interfere again in our matter, You don't deserve to call your self Pakistani & muslim.

I suggest that the Pakistan government do something productive and useful rather than wasting time and conveniently diverting attention of their people away from real problems in this manner

the Holy Koran never says that it is blasphemous to depict the Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him). It was a later invention of fanatic religious followers. There exist early paintings of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) in Persia, Syria and the Middle East which were made up to the 12th century. Religious fanatics took over after that.

Why don't you go to M. F. Hussein and ask him the same when he started all this with drawing nude paintings of gods and goddesses of other religion? Does Islam allow that? Is Islam biased?

this blasphemous habit of anti-islamic forces is going out of control, alas,we can't indignify who they call Jesus Christ, because Islam tells us not to criticise anyone's religion,......so .....in the battle of loose morality ANTI-ISLAMIC forces are winning,,,,,,,,and will always win(if this is called winning)

i am happy that at least terrorist will not be easily found in facebook. i propose to keep competitions alive in every public places and caricatures on display in seats of public transport , utility places like airport postoffice and even in currency. that will be a good way to get rid of terrorists.

*SMH* I dont know which is worse...forbidding of images of Mohammed in Islam/ strict interpretation of Islam by present day Muslims or the wanton act of provoking Muslims by the westerners by deliberately depicting images of Mohammed without regard to religious sentiments. It's a vicious cycle. First wikipedia and now facebook. Something gotta give.

Killing innocent people , bombing in iraq , afghanistan and pakistan and proving themselves innocent and the victom of terroristm on international media is the job done by the US Govt . I hope the people of these countries might understand the intensions of their govts and will not support them in their cause of mass distruction . Islam is peace . Hate those who creates mischief on the land weather they are muslims , jews or christians.
