Rohan Naravane, May 19, 2010 1417 hrs IST

Dell tries to perfect the netbook formula with their new iteration of the Mini

Cool design and variety of colored tops available, very good battery life, easily workable keyboard and touch-pad, compact charger, well priced, 3 configurations to choose from

Gets heated at the bottom under intensive use, HDMI port, which was available in the earlier model, has been removed

Following the launch of Intel's Pine Trail range of Atom processors, every manufacturer seems to be busy with refreshed versions of their respective netbooks. Today we have for review Dell's Inspiron Mini 10. While some makers, like Asus, have made nominal changes to the exterior, the Mini 10 has gone through a complete makeover since its last iteration. This earlier model was appreciated for having an HDMI port on-board, but trashed for a paltry 3-cell battery that was packaged along with it. Dell has tried to perfect their netbook formula with this model. Let's find out if they have succeeded in doing so.

I would like to install a game on my Dell Inspiron Mini 1012, specifically 'Fable: The Lost Chapters' however i'm not sure how compatible this notebook is with gaming. as far as i can tell it meets the system requirements but again, i'm not positve. How well does this laptop perform with gaming programs? I was also considering installing my Adobe Photo Shop Elements 8, but i'm not sure how compatible this laptop is with that either?

Whats the functionality of the SIM card slot below the battery? I tried to insert my sim card in it but it didn't go inside.

This looks and performs cool compared to acer mini. like all mini laps image and video processing is a limitation. Dell mini serves the purpose and rates good.

I got it delivered approx 15 days ago. A great piece of hardware and eye-turner for its great looks! I like the white one best since both the base and top lid are white and go very well with black interiors. Do not forget that when you charge the netbook, even the connector emits a white LED light... you'd love it for its looks (am I repeating myself?). As regards hardware specs, I think this one is equivalent to, if not beats, any netbook in the Indian market. Combine that with a great service from Dell, and you'd know what I mean. GO FOR IT!

I am really looking forward to buy this netbook. Currently I own a Compaq notebook with an AMD powere processor the performance is OK but heating problem is too much to handle with. I sit in a non AC room so the problem worsens it get way too hot and after reading this review I'm a bit skeptic about going buying the Dell Mini. What do you suggest I do

In my personal experience, I've not seen Asus Eee PCs getting heated up as much. You could check out the Eee PC 1005PE or 1005HA

I am looking at Toshiba or Asus for my next netbook. Which one do you think is best. Also where can I buy Asus or Toshiba in mumbai. ASUS EeePC 1005PE-PU17 Toshiba Mini NB 305-N410BN ASUS EeePC 1201-PN HP Mini 5102 Dell Inspiron Mini 10

I dont think the Toshiba NB-305 is selling in India since it isn't listed on their India website. For Asus, try samvik enterprises in lamington road (23857620). Asus 1005PE is a good pic. So is the Dell Inspiron Mini 10.

Thanks Techtree for this review I will soon buy a netbook, which fits to my needs, I am having a close eye on this Inspiron mini and HP mini210 which one should I go for?, I heard HP laptops has this heating problem but the review states this one too has it. Please comment.

They're almost neck-to-neck in terms of features. But the highest-end SKU of Dell is cheaper than the HP. So I'd call it value for money. Haven't tested the HP 210 yet, so can't comment on heating. I like the fact that Dell gives you at-home warranty coverage instead of carrying it to a service center. I'd prefer it over HP.

The model is very similar to HP Mini 210 series.

Counter-strike should run fine on this. Which "other" games are you referring to? Check out our multi-part series of "Games to play on a Netbook" in the Games section to know more about which games can be played well on netbooks
