A bunch of eager Maemo developers have successfully ported Google's Android Eclair 2.1 mobile operating system on the Nokia N900. Under a NITDroid project, the contributing Maemo developers named Helmy and DJ_Steve aim to get Android running on N900 and N800 series tablets. The modders have used SD cards to run and load the Android OS on Nokia Internet Tablets. Last week we had reported of an iPhone 3G running Android mobile operating system. Looks like Android is slowly taking over the mobile phone world.

Nokia N900 Internet Tablet runs Maemo OS and several developers are working on apps for it. Meanwhile, certain enthusiasts started the NITDroid Project where NIT stands for Nokia Internet Tablet. The two developers managed to get the kernel and userspace port from scratch of the Android OS to Nokia Internet Tablet hardware. Android Eclair 2.1 was ported to N900 with basic functions of Android work, including keyboard support. Still, this was pretty much an initial port and wasn't running smoothly as the hardware is capable of.

Well, that's interesting, but there's zero chance I'll replace Maemo with Android. What would be really useful, though, would be a port of Android's Dalvik Java runtime to Maemo / Meego such that many Android apps could run on the N900 as is. I'm not yet aware of a reason this couldn't be done, given time and sufficient skill (both of which I regrettably lack). Am I missing a technical hurdle?
