The Raptor class of hard drives from Western Digital have attained legendary status like no other hard drive, thanks to their extraordinary high data transfer speeds and the 10,000 RPM spindle rotation speeds. Western Digital has created this species of drives that run at breakneck speeds, obliterating completely, anything and everything that comes its way. After the Raptors came the VelociRaptor, which is a 300 GB SATA 3.0 Gbps hard drive, we reviewed a couple of years ago. We had mentioned back then that the capacity of the VelociRaptor, which is meant primarily for gamers, may not be up to the mark due to the immensity of games today.

Probably to remedy the situation, WD has brought out a new VelociRaptor WD6000HLHX, doubling the capacity to 600 GB, doubling the cache buffer to 32 MB and doubling the interface speed to the latest SATA 6.0 Gbps. Though WD brands this for Enterprise, we think that enthusiasts and gamers would be more interested in this drive. Just like its predecessor, this is a 2.5-inch form-factor drive sitting on a rather oversized heat sink, complete with radiator fins surrounding the drive. We've seen the stellar performance of its predecessors; now, let us see if this one can prove to be a worthy successor.

No sense in choosing this drive over an SSD if you are looking for pure speed.

Q. You can think of it this way, if an enthusiast can spend 30K for a top-of-the-line graphics card, can't he spend just 18k for the fastest hard drive available? A. NO. Q. Why? A. Better stick with RAID or go for SSD. Q. Zzzz? A. H-C Gamers Sys's runs almost 24/7 thats why.

I've seen 80 GB Intel SSD's e-tail for about 13K. Throw in a 1.2K conversion kit and a 3.8K 1TB HDD and you'll have a setup that's much better for gamers and enthusiasts. SSD read vs raptor read is 250MB/s vs 55 MB/s. Not much of a competition. You could load your OS and your "current game" onto the SSD and use the 1TB drive for everything else. VelociRaptors don't make sense at home.
