Excellent hardware and superb pricing. But will that be enough?

Camera

The camera is one of the biggest attractions of the Nokia N8. It is the first phone from Nokia to feature a 12 megapixel autofocus camera. Also, while other manufacturers often leave their cameras at impressive sounding resolution figures, Nokia has also equipped the camera with a xenon flash, a rarity these days on phones but at the same time a boon when it comes to photographing in the dark. Also, a first for Nokia is the ability of the N8 to record HD videos, 1280 x 720 to be precise, at 25 frames per second. If you think those are just fancy sounding numbers then you should take a look at the images and videos released by Nokia taken on the N8. One look at them and you'll realize that the Nokia N8 has all the makings of an excellent camera phone, perhaps the best yet.

HDMI-Out

What's the point of having such a good camera if you cannot watch your photos and videos on your TV? Well, Nokia has taken care of that and provided the N8 with HDMI-Out connectivity. Simply connect the N8 to your HDTV with the supplied HDMI cable and you can view all your photos and videos in their full high definition glory. The N8 also supports Dolby Digital Plus surround sound output through the HDMI.

Connectivity

The Nokia N8 is the first phone in the world to support five GSM frequencies. That is 850/900/1700/1900/2100! This means no matter wherever in the world you go, you can be sure that your N8 is equipped to support the service providers available there. It also supports HSDPA up to 10.2 Mbps and HSUPA up to 2.0 Mbps. Also, the Nokia N8 is one of the few phones announced so far to have Wi-Fi 802.11n support. If that was not enough, the Nokia also comes with Bluetooth v3.0, making it the second device after the Samsung Wave to have this feature. A-GPS is on board along with FM radio and transmitter.

Hardware

The Nokia N8 runs on a ARM 11 680 MHz processor and also has 3D Graphics HW accelerator. There was a time when Nokia smartphones used to have hardware graphics acceleration (remember Nokia N93, N95, N82?) but later they abandoned it for a faster CPU. Now the Nokia N8 has the bests of both worlds. With a dedicated graphics accelerator, the N8 will be able to display better quality graphics while gaming or image and video playback and it will also facilitate the high quality image and video recording that the phone is capable of, without stressing the processor which would be free to do other tasks.

The N8 also comes with 256 MB of RAM for all your applications, which should come in handy knowing how good Symbian is with multi-tasking. Also, the phone will have 16GB of built-in memory for all your files and furthermore it also supports a microSD card slot so you can expand it up to 32GB, taking the total memory to a whopping 48GB.

Have recently spoken with Nokia India and they have categorically stated that the N8 will not be available in India until Diwali (if that). Also the estimated price on various blogs are way off the mark and pure speculation. The handset in the US alone is $549 (Rs. 26,352). Now add a 7% Sales tax (Rs. 1845) and an approx. $70 (Rs. 3,360) Intl Shipping charge and it amounts to roughly around Rs. 32,000/- The Nokia N8 is in direct competition with the iPhone 4, so don’t expect it to come cheap.

I don't get it.... what seems to be a positive and fact-based review ends with speculation that the OS is the weak link and Nokia should start over. The user interface is the most visible, and important part of the OS from a user experience perspective, but it's only a small part of it. Symbian OS is the most advanced mobile operating system in terms of it's efficiency, power management, multitasking, and support for advanced hardware and communications... and it supports multiple user interfaces for different form factors and different interaction models. If Nokia should be derided for anything, it should be for removing graphics acceleration hardware from their devices that prevented the evolution of the UI. Finally, it's not just about the UI anymore.... it's about the range of online services. The iPhone store excels at apps and music, but Nokia has a far broader and richer online services portfolio for their devices, including not just apps and music, but e-mail, instant messaging, PIM and file sync, navigation, presence, photo sharing, ecommerce and sending money. The success of the coming generation of devices has little to do with User Interface, and everything to do with integration with online services. For a company such as Apple (who will not allow Flash on their devices less it weaken their control over the delivery of content), integration with other services in not in their mindset, while Nokia actively seeks such integration, and has a far broader portfolio of their own services. It's time for the bloggers to stop harping on about UI, and start comparing the services value proposition offered by each Google, Apple, Nokia, and RIM.

These days it's not just enough to have hundreds of features, the interface that you use to operate these features has to be user friendly as well, otherwise all those features are meaningless. And it is in this aspect that Nokia needs to catch up with the competition.

Man, I bought a N900, a pretty expensive phone, maemo based - my 3rd. and last Nokia. Nokia deserves it's downfall: they put phones on market, talking about the developing promisses, but they don't give a decent support, and leaves us, costumers, hanging. My N900 GPS is unusable, it's the worst GPS software of all time - an ancient version of OVI Maps, for maemo, which Nokia decided to not update. And drop every costumer that, like my, believed in Nokia's false promisses of "maemo". The impression I had, in all my 3 Nokias (maemo, and symbian based) is this: you can use only half of the capabilities of the phone, due the software limits, and lack of support. Will never buy a Nokia again.

I had a similar experience with N97 .... 4 visits to the Nokia repair center in 2 months; more than 25 days loss of service; Nokia failed even to return calls when i ask for a replacement machine. This service level is unacceptable for a business user, so I had to replace my phone. I have also given up on Nokia after 10 years of fairly trouble free use

Nokia have given MeeGo v1.0 support for N900. Install MeeGo on N900. All your woes will be solved.

when it comes to hardware nokia is still the leader, but agree nokia's software development team is riding on a 50cc bike where competition is driving on 200cc.

me and my brother were biggest nokia fans we used nokia's 6600, 7610, n91,e65,n95,n97,5800 and to me thr biggest +point was after sales srvc network and some software back up . but nowadays other service network of likes samsung is far better in cosumer satatisfaction and there handsets r designed keeping consumer in mind such as corby,star3g, star, omnia hd . even though n8 looks imprresive but ill think many a times before buying it as i lost the trust that i used to have in nokia products.

Nokia needs to wake up to a tough competition. They can't take it slow. From N900 till N8 they should have had very little time lag. I quite liked the N8 - what I really care about is Call Quality, Speakerphone Loudness & Ease of tapping nos. to either dial or sms. This is way too important for me (conservative user). I would also like to see 1Ghz speed from Nokia. AND hey I liked the monoblock form factor, cuz the slider is one more step to getting to the features. I am lazy - I like monoblock.

We have no bias against any manufacturer and believe me the first thing we do when a product is launched in India is call the company and ask them to send us their new product. But if a company does not want to send us their product for some reason there is nothing we can do about it.

N8 is being portrayed as God's own gift to mankind- well i think it is not. 12MP camera is nothing new- other manufacturers have had this for over a year. The Nokia design team has lost all design ideas and looks of N8 are Staid & stodgy.Nokia needs injection of fresh blood in its phone design unit.

"Dump it completely and start anew with something like Windows Phone 7" Except that the roadmap for symbian is pretty clear: - symbian^3 : new powerfull SDK (Qt) + some code cleaning + a few UI improvements - symbian^4 : new UI writen from scratch + compability break (removing a lot of legacy stuff)

What makes you people say Nokia's UI is not good ?, there was no such words about this same UI before Iphone OS and Andriod came and i don't mean the Iphone or Android has made people to look for better UI. Symbian was/is known for customisation and features its the lack of Eye-candy stuff, which Android and Iphone O.S mastered, which is a let down for some people. With the launch of Symbian^3 that too has been addressed for example direct access to facebook and twitter, Multiple homescreen(you don't really need 7 for that matter), Multi-touch. For power users still Symbian remains the best Mobile OS out there.
