Hooked to Facebook on your Android phone? Bothered about the lack of the "Messaging" facility on the application? Well, not any more!

Facebook has announced an update to its "Facebook for Android" application. The update, which enabled the application to graduate to version 1.2, endows it with the much sought after messaging support. You can now view and send messages and updates to your buddies and to the pages that you subscribe to. The application supports threaded messaging as well. The application can be downloaded from the Android Market and like the previous version, it is absolutely free.

It was back in September 2009 that Facebook first announced its official Android application. Back then, it was a barebones application and all you could do using it was to view your wall, read your news feed, update your status and comment or "like" posts on your news feed.  Users also complained about the lack of support for Facebook chat - which incidentally is missing even in this update. We can only hope the application will be able to match the capabilities offered by the iPhone Facebook application - which, as of now, seems to be the benchmark for an ideal mobile Facebook application.

About time! The old app was very basic. Android is missing so many key features that it makes it very hard to justify owning an android handset over an IPhone. I can't believe I had to download 3rd party software to connect to exchange or that there is no support for HTML email. Most people expected more from Google.
