    ZOTAC GTX470

Roydon Cerejo, Apr 23, 2010 1549 hrs IST

    Huge improvement over its predecessor

Good DX11 performance, low idle power consumption, lightweight, efficient cooling

Not much of an overclocker, load power draw is a bit high

So I'm sure you all have heard by now that Fermi is available in stores or at least e-tailers. We are not going into the details of the Fermi architecture, as we've already covered it before and you can read about it here.

The first retail card that we received is from none other than ZOTAC. Simply called the Geforce GTX470, this is the standard version of the Fermi graphics card with 607MHz core speed and 448 shader cores. The GDDR5 memory runs at 3348MHz on a 320-bit memory interface with a grand total of 1.25GB. The card has full support for DX11, Direct Compute and OpenCL, which is a common programming language that all future games will be based on.

The strong points of the Fermi card and the main reason it was built from the ground up was due to heavy focus on tessellation, which is a cheaper way to enhance textures without much drop in performance. Another inclusion is a dedicated audio chip for HDMI audio out, so no longer will we have to rely on the SPDIF-out of the motherboard.

Let's see how the younger sibling matches up against the GTX285, which it will be replacing and ATI's offering.

Bundle

The bundle includes the following accessories;

  • Instruction manual
  • Driver CD
  • DVI to VGA adapter
  • 2x molex to 6-pin power adapter
  • Mini-HDMI to HDMI converter

What is this? is this an advertorial.. Dear Roydon and whoever is managing the whole website I guess the ‘editor’, if you continue to publish such reviews you will lose your credibility. Ameya? What is happening??

The reviewer does not have the faintest idea of what competition means. Competition is at similar price points, and it is amply clear that 5850 and gtx470 are in completely different price brackets currently with the 5850 being a whole 7-8000 Rs cheaper. The reviewer himself says so while also making the inane statement on how they are supposed to be competitors. Even the most of the games favoring 470 by 25-30% remark is debatable when one looks at 4xAA comparisons across the board where the 470 only comes ahead at Far cry 2 and 1-2 other games.

I don't agree with te reviewer at all The 470 fails at performance vs price as do all Nvidia cards... I believe the 5850 is simply untouchable at that price point given its performance and price. The 470 given it's price should be matched up against a 5870. Simply ridiculous it's being compared to the 5850 :). On a side note could you guys add some kind of new comment system where it stores accounts so I don't have to type stuff in everytime please :) Thanks for the review !

Power consumption result regarding HD5850 is totally unrealistic and also for other cards. As for HD5850 it's 170W part, how the hell the whole system will pull only 165W when you have "Intel Corei7 940 CPU, ECS X58B-A2, 3 x 1GB DDR3 1600 MHz Kingston HyperX, Hitachi 500GB SATA II and CoolerMaster 1000W PSU with around 83-90% efficiency. Are other parts on diet not consuming any power don't they add up on total power consumption. Because today's game also utilizes CPU a lot. There is some thing wrong with you power consumption testing methodology.

Sorry typing mistake it's:- "There is some thing wrong with your power consumption testing methodology."

The power consumption figures are right, the reviewer has mentioned the power taken at LOAD(100% usage) OF THE GPU and not as the whole system ! Some common sense please ?

@Know things. {" Roydon Cerejo has written - The IDLE power draw was taken on the desktop while we ran the Unigine benchmark to stress the system. An average of the power was then noted of the entire system."} It should be now clear to you that they have use WATT METER to connect PSU and record Idle and load reading. Even when Idling every other parts still draw current example average Hdd draws 6-9watt on load but when idle it still draws 2-5watt and every other parts in PC does that. By the way have you ever seen Watt meter.

@Know thing. I forgot to mention Idle power of HD5850 is 27watts and for load is 170watts. See the Chart of Power Consumption you will understand. whether reading were taken from gpu or whole system.

OMG Mr Roydon did u get a overclocked card or something coz ur numbers for the GTX 470 vs HD 5850 are sckewed like a corkscrew :P. Please run the tests again and also Mr Roydon why havent u posted the temperatures i would love to see those (oh did u use LN2 ).also a card which runs consistently at over a 100 Degrees Celsius on load + only year warranty is not good news how can anyone give this 4 star rating :P . All hail Mr Roydon the biggest Nvidia fanboy among us :P

i think this card should have been the direct competitor to hd 5850.and shold have been priced at 17 to 18 k.that would have made this card a killer deal and i also wonder how come gtx 285 and gtx 470 are priced so similarly.

Price is still high! but its expected from Nvidia and the newly launched fermis are in huge demand. It should be @16-18k price range to compete HD5850.
