It was back in September 2009 that Facebook introduced its stripped down, Lite version of the popular social networking website called Facebook Lite. The Lite version of the site was intended for low bandwidth connections and for users who faced issues accessing the full version of Facebook on slower connections.


However, seven months after the Lite version arrived, Facebook has for reasons best known to them, decided to pull the plug on the service and has shut it down. The erstwhile Facebook Lite URL at http://lite.facebook.com now redirects to the full Facebook webpage. The confirmation regarding the closure of Facebook Lite came on its official fan page where Facebook thanked everyone who used Facebook Lite.


The statement went like this: "Thanks to everyone who tried out Facebook Lite. We're no longer supporting it, but learned a lot from the test of a slimmed-down site. If you used Lite, you'll now be taken to the main Facebook.com site" . Facebook hasn't given any other explanation as to what triggered the shutting down of the service.


Facebook Lite offered almost all Facebook core functionality, including adding new friends, writing on walls, sending messages and sharing images and videos. The only things excluded were the applications built by developers for the site. Wonder if it was pressure from the app developers who did not want a version of the site minus the apps to become popular!

My employer blocks facebook on my laptop whether I am in the office or at home because people were getting viruses from the apps. They did not block facebook lite because it did not have those. Now I have no access to facebook. Oh well.

Facebook is blocked at work - Lite was not - now I have to behave from 9-5

This saddens me, it was the only thing that kept me on facebook at all. Won't be going back there now.
