You may have been in a situation where you accidentally deleted your important data or it just got deleted due to data corruption. I'm sure the first reaction was of panic because you lost data that was probably gathered painstakingly over a period of time and you did not know what to do. However, you need not be so worried in such a scenario now, thanks to the different freeware software available to get your lost and deleted data back for you.

Remember, most of these software are more effective if you install it on a perfectly working PC and attach the affected hard drive to it as the secondary drive.

Recuva

Size: 3.6 MB

Recuva is a freeware that can recover deleted files not only from any normal folder on your hard drive, but also from your Recycle Bin, digital camera or MP3 player. Files can be recovered from a formatted drive as well. You can recover deleted emails from Microsoft Outlook Express, Mozilla Thunderbird or Windows Live Mail. Similarly, unsaved Word documents can also be recovered. The state of the file is color coded; green files can be easily recovered, while red files are hard to recover. Also available as a portable version, Recuva is just a 3.7 MB download.

Undelete Plus

Size: 3.7 MB

Probably one of the quickest and easiest ways to restore accidentally deleted data is by using Undelete Plus. This software allows you to not only recover files that had once been inside the emptied Recycle Bin, but also recover permanently deleted files that are deleted using Shift + Delete, and thus never enter the Recycle Bin. Similarly, you can recover files that have been deleted from the command prompt as well. It can also recover images from memory card formats such as CF, SmartMedia, MultiMedia and Secure Digital.

Undelete Plus works with all types of Windows file systems including FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS and NTFS5. Just a 3.7 MB download, this program works under Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista/7 operating systems. A portable version is also available, which requires no installation.

ADRC Data Recovery Software Tools

Size: 44.6 KB

ADRC Data Recovery Software Tools is not really a single utility. It consists of several different data recovery tools, which assures support for a huge variety of file systems and drive types. The user interface is simple enough for even a novice user to find no difficulty finding his way around. The task of recovering data is fairly simple because the software is focused on that task and does not indulge in other complexities.

The user can easily undelete files, disk image back up or restore a backup image. You can even copy files from hard disk with bad sectors, clone disks, backup, edit and restore your boot parameters. The download size is an unbelievably tiny 44 KB and it does not require any installation since it is portable.

Jayesh, excellent article and good research. One small request to make this more useful: whenever techtree reviews stuff, I'd like to see more opinion by techtree staff i.e. you guys should give some recommendations on finally which one to use (you can vary it by type of user being novice, expert and moderate). This shall help us readers choose a software from this more easily. we barely spend a few minutes through each article and such recommendations by you guys shall make this site more useful. Thanks
