Power consumption
We tested the power consumption of the device and it does match up with what they state in the specifications. Since it does not have a hard switch to turn off power, we were expecting measurable power consumption in the off state, but the power meter could not register any power consumption in this state. The idle power consumption was found to be 3 W, while it consumed 2 W in the sleep mode. It consumed 13 W while printing, while the maximum that it consumed was 16 W while copying and when printer and scanner are simultaneously used. This indeed means power saving, but the fact is that these power saving benefits are of no use since the printer prints at a very low speed and the power consumed per print is therefore high.
Verdict
The Epson Stylus Office TX510FN produces good quality prints in the normal mode. Unlike the TX300F we had reviewed earlier, the draft quality prints are also perfectly usable. It is a fast printer in the normal mode, thus making it suitable for office users.
The fax option and the networking features are certainly going to be appealing to office users. Networking capability is also something that you may find useful, especially if you happen to have a network. All you need to do is to install this as a network MFD and that will allow any person on the network to print directly to this MFD without having to connect it to a PC. It uses four separate ink cartridges and is therefore more economical and can produce better prints.
The cost of printing is economical as well, at least on paper. There are standard and high capacity cartridges available for this printer. The cost of each high capacity cartridge is Rs.655, while that of each standard capacity cartridges is Rs.485. The high capacity black cartridge can print around 795 pages, standard capacity black cartridge can print 230 pages, high capacity color cartridge composite yield is 815 prints, while the color cartridges composite yield is around 310 prints. The cost per black print for standard capacity cartridge comes to around Rs. 1.86 and it gets even better for the high capacity black cartridge at just Rs. 1.60 per page. Assuming equal usage of black and each of the three color cartridges, the cost per page for color print is around Rs.7.44.
The cost of black print is therefore very economical, while the color prints are a bit pricey. Epson provides two toll-free numbers - one for service and one for ordering cartridges to be conveniently delivered to your doorstep. It comes with a one-year warranty. Priced at Rs.7,699, this is a well-priced MFD when you consider all the features that you get.
