    Philips 42PFL7409/98 TV

Way better than the 5000 series, but it's too expensive

Slim bezel, USB with DivX, good picture quality for HD content, powerful speakers, easy to setup

High price, noise reduction feature could work better

The 5000 series that Philips sent us last October wasn't really impressive. Apart from the high price tag the TV had quite poor black levels and full HD content just didn't make the cut. Since this is the lower range of LCD TVs, we decided to call in their higher range - the 7000 and the 9000 series to see if things have improved.

Today we have the 42" version in their 7000 series, which is the only model currently available. Just like its younger sibling it comes with a full HD resolution and a very narrow bezel, which makes it look particularly large. This is quite an improvement over the 5000 series and the TV also has premium looks. The brightness levels are good at 500cd/m2 and a contrast ratio of 80000:1. Action sequences should not be a problem for this TV, as it's got a quick 3ms response time. You also get a couple of Philips' patented technology, like Pixel Precise HD and some image enhancement features like 3D Combfilter, light sensor and 100Hz motion plus among others.

All this looks good on paper but real world performance is what matters and we'll soon find out about it. The price tag on this one is pretty steep and will face good competition from the Samsung 6 Series and Sony. Let's see if it's able to make a mark for itself.
