A few years ago, if you told someone that a social networking website could become the most visited website in U.S. by 2010, he would have smirked upon you and walked away with a funny look on his face.

However, in 2010, the world's largest social networking website Facebook has managed to do what no other website has ever done. It actually managed to topple Google and become the most visited website in U.S. last week! This is no doubt a phenomenal achievement by Facebook whose history on the world wide web started as recently as 2005.

People did notice that Facebook was on a steady rise and that it was the most popular site in U.S. during festive seasons. However, this is the first time that Facebook managed to attract more users than Google. The rate of Facebook growth, which is a staggering 185 percent year-on-year is way above Google's meager 9 percent. What is to be noted here is that this data has been recorded only for the Google.com domain. Other Google services like YouTube and Gmail does make Google a far bigger competitor. But then Facebook doesn't compete with Google on those fronts. Google already has a couple of entities in the social networking space - most notably Orkut, which is dominant in Brazil and India and is little known elsewhere globally. It also made a recent splash with Google Buzz.

Fcebook currently claims that it has over 400 million users signed up and that number is steadily increasing. It has also opened new offices at various locations worldwide, including India where it plans to expand and topple Orkut's dominance as the de-facto social network in the country. Even without an India office, their plans seem to have worked as Orkut sees a steady drop in its number of active users.
