It has been quite some time since a proposal for a new top level domain name .xxx was mooted to classify pornography websites on the Internet. The proposal, which was first talked about back in the year 2000 has already been through three rejections. However, with an Internet governing body - ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) considering this domain again, the issue is back in contention.
Interestingly, most pornography businesses are against this proposal and so are anti-pornography activists. Sounds odd, but its true! While both have different reasons, the real supports for .xxx domains are domain registrars who see a huge financial advantage should .xxx domains become a reality soon. The anti porn activists main worry is that .xxx domains will help the creation of a virtual red-light district. They also allege that ".xxx" suffix would be easily available to minors.
As the world eagerly awaits what the next ICANN meeting does to the future of .xxx, there are people who are getting ready to buy premium domain names first and make money, really quick! Wonder who gets the Google.xxx domain!
I don't think the anti-porn activists should worry about the .xxx making it easy for minors to find porn. As it stands, all they have to do is Google a sexual term or body part, and they'll come up with many results! It's not like it's difficult to find now, I don't think putting the .xxx extension will make it worse.
Absolutely...NOT! No friggin' way. It should be left to the individual sites if they choose to pick that name or not.
Forcing them is absolutely retarded
if .xxx does get passed, even then porno websites will not switch totally to the .xxx sites since then it simply means any country can totally block out porno sites by banning the .xxx domain in one stroke.
.xxx is about money and no one likes to put all their money in a site which can be blacklisted in seconds
