After disappointing HTC HD2 users with the news that that phone can not be officially updated to Windows Phone 7, here's something to cheer about.
Joe Belfiore who gave us all the confirmation regarding the HD2, also showcased three new phone models during his presentation at the ongoing MIX10 in Las Vegas. The phones were from different brands. One was the now familiar Acer prototype which you might have seen at the Mobile World Congress 2010. The other was an LG device with a sliding QWERTY keyboard. Lastly, we had a new entrant in the form of the Samsung "slate" which is nothing but a replica of the existing, S60 based Omnia HD.
If you notice, all current S60 version 5 phones have three hardware buttons. All Samsung had to do was to re-engineer these buttons to make the phone Windows Phone 7 ready - and looks like that is what they have done. On the hardware scheme of things, the Omnia HD already fit the bill to be capable of running Microsoft's new OS - with 256MB of RAM, 8/16GB of memory and hardware acceleration support.
It is unlikely that the existing Omnia HD will get updated to Windows Phone 7 - which is the sad bit here.
