India's first FTTH service launched in the Pink City
BSNL, who of late seems to be on the rampage with its 3G Services and broadband related price cuts (in case of WiMax), has announced yet another 'first in the country' by kicking off the first FTTH (Fibre to the Home) service by any service provider in India. FTTH, as made obvious by the name, is a technology that uses fiber optic cables to bring high-speed broadband connectivity direct from the service provider to the subscribers home.
FTTH access has been readied for 68 buildings across Jaipur as of now. BSNL has plans to bring 200 buildings with access to its FTTH service. Work is on to achieve the same. BSNL has tied up with AKSH Optifibre, who will be responsible for providing multiplay services - complete with high definition content across Rajasthan as and when the service expands. Currently, BSNL has targeted the cities of Jodhpur, Udaipur, Ajmer, Kota and Alwar for future FTTH launches.
The FTTH service is capable of providing speeds of upto 1,000 mbps. This makes the service a desirable one for users who need high speed friendly services like IPTV, HDTV, 3DTV, video on demand, bandwidth on demand, video conferencing and interactive gaming. According to BSNL, its FTTH service is a "self healing" one, which means that it is capable of routing traffic through another line, in case one of the optical fiber cables is damaged.
