It is a well-known fact that the speeds of portable hard drives do not cross a certain limit and that barrier is due to the USB 2.0 interface. But things are about to change now with the introduction of SuperSpeed USB 3.0, which boasts of speeds of up to 4.8 Gbps. We were able to lay our hands on the Western Digital My Book 3.0 hard drive with this new data interface. The hard drive boasts of 1 TB capacity and a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 card is bundled along, so that anyone with an older system with PCI Express slot can upgrade their systems to the new high speed interface. We have reviewed this USB 3.0 hard drive, so read on to find out how much better it is than its predecessors.

The first thing that we noticed on opening the box is that drive comes securely packaged in a box with plastic damping material to protect it from shock damage. The accessories are neatly packed, thus reducing the chances of them getting lost.

Bundle

  • WD My Book 3.0 1 TB
  • USB 3.0 cable
  • USB 3.0 card for PCIe slot

As is usual, WD has provided all the necessary cables required to be used with this drive. It comes with a USB 3.0 card with two USB 3.0 ports so that even people with older computers with PCI Express slot can upgrade to the newer and faster interface without having to buy an expensive motherboard with this interface. A low profile bracket is also provided so that the card can be used in a small form factor HTPC cabinet. The driver disk contains the drivers for the USB 3.0 controller.
