mts blaze is the only pre paid provider i know of, its also the only mac compatible usb modems out there.
It works out of the box, i know others can be made with some tweaking but this works out of the box.
speed in cities is very good and they are cheaper than other providers.
their top plan is 150 Rs cheaper than other providers.
mts blaze - 1500 - 15 Gb
reliance - 1750 - 15 Gb only post paid
Tataindicom - 1650 - 15 Gb only post paid
Mts is the only option for you if you want mac compatibility and pre paid connection.
i use it only when i go out of town because its pre paid i don't have to pay when i am not traveling. That saves money.
I use it as a backup internet connection in case my main BSNL Broadband is down. My NetConnect is the old 1x good enough most times though not always from light activity like browsing and email. Not good enough for video or voice chat or heavy downloads for that I rely on BSNL. I haven't experienced the new Reliance NetConnect+ i.e. the 3G equivalent yet.
EV-DO - 3.1Mbps D/l & 1.8Mbps U/l - is fairly new so expect teething problems with service (both customer care and technical). In a way, 3G auction delay will help this wireless broadband technology to make base, mature and get yields before the prices reduce further for the benefit of the consumers at large.
For now Tata Photon + & Reliance seem best options with EV-DO. Therefore now EDGE technology just seems like a bad idea. Over time, there's hope of many more appealing pre-paid options as well.

I have been using Photon plus for last 3 months.. In fact i didn't know which one is the best before i took this.. I contacted reliance also.. But tatas were the first to respond and deliver it at my place.. I have a bsnl broadband (512 Kbps)connection at Chennai.. Comparing both i don't find it too slow or too fast.. Yes offcource it is fluctuating as you said.. But the added advantage of mobility is much appealing that i wont like a wired connection any more..
