Mid-range Gaming PC (March 2010 Update)

Build a gaming PC for less than Rs. 40,000

We are back with a updated guide on mid-range gaming PC, like we did for the rest of the builds. As time goes by, we see DDR3 inching closer to the mainstream arena and by the end of 2010 it should replace DDR2 in terms of acceptance and cost. DX11 is still hot in this segment; where on one hand you have DX11 cards that have infiltrated all price brackets, but on the other hand there hasn't been any substantial usage of DX11 so far in the recently launched games. Therefore the question that arises is, is it really worthwhile buying one right now when you can get similar performance from an older and cheaper DX10/DX10.1 card.

Thankfully DX11 is not the only thing ATI has going for them. With the 5xxx series and other bonus features, like really low power consumption that leads to cooler running temperatures, Stream processing and Eyefinity support, those extra bucks seem worth it.

Most of the components have remained the same from our previous build while some have been swapped for something cheaper and some the other way around. We haevn't stuck to the Rs. 35,000 mark as we did last time, but we've made sure we don't go beyond the 40K either. So without much waiting, let's see what our new build looks like.

Note: Cost of the Operating System is Extra

CPU and Motherboard

AMD Phenom II X2 550 BE/ 555 BE (Rs. 4,500 - Rs. 5,000)

The  Phenom II X2 550 continues to be the best pick in this price range and now we have a new entry called the X2 555 BE. This one runs at a slightly faster 3.2GHz, which means the X2 550 will replace the X2 545 at a lower price point. The X2 555 is available in the market for around 5K. Either ways both of them are equally good, so pick up whichever is available.

ECS A785GM-M (Rs. 4,600)

Since DDR3 prices are falling drastically, it's only natural that we change the Gigabyte 785G DDR2 board to an ECS A785GM-M motherboard due to its rich features and low price. We would have loved to get the Gigabyte, but since its price was a little over 5K and we had to stay within budget to accommodate the DDR3 RAM, we had to leave it out. This is still a rock solid motherboard with debug LED's, DDR3 1333MHz support and plenty of other ECS special features that help you in overclocking your CPU.

Memory

Corsair/G.Skill 1333MHz DDR3 - (Rs. 2,700)

You can get either Corsair or G.Skill Value RAM for this price. We strongly suggest you go in for two sticks of 1GB memory since you shouldn't miss out on Dual Channel goodness. The other companies that you can consider are Kingston and OCZ but don't buy anything other than these reputed ones.

What is the point of having an AMD 550BE when u can't (try ur luck atleast ) unlock the remaining cores with an ACC supporting mobo ?? also Samsung P2250 beats the hell out of BenQ with its 2ms response time !! finally a Creative Soundblaster card with EAX support is a must for any gamer....

Roydon thanks for updating this thread... I have been waiting for this for quite sometime.. I need your help on selecting an appropriate Mother board im confused as I have received different feedback from people. 1. Many of my friends suggest to go for an Asus motherboard and can you recommend one for your config 2. Is Asus better than Gigabyte and vice versa.. suggest one and why?.. thanks

You should seriously change this mobo. Go in for one with ACC support that way you can unlock the 2 dormant cores on the Phenom X2 550/555 BE ... chk anand tech for more . A quad core for the price of a dual core

see go for the phenom II x4 955BE you will have to add around 1k over the 945 + u get a unlocked multiplier + higher stock freq as far as the gpu is concerned go for the sapphire 5770 it is available for around10k the 5770 performs marginally lower than the GTX 260 but consumes less power in both load and idle and is DX11 so its a obv choice

Hi Avinash, If possible please wait for the AMD 890 chipset to be released at the market. If you can get a good deal with it - at the compromise for a slightly slower porc to balance the budget - you will have a really future proof PC because Ph II 6 Core will be supported at its fullest specs by that mobo.

Good configuration for the price. Please add a page where you put up the links which lead to the respective product review. You can also consider placing links for every product which take the user to the product page on their website. Please suggest Intel alternatives. I3 is cheaper now and somewhat more future proof because when AMD Phenom II 6-core processors are gonna roll... it requires a motherboard update (890 chipset). Thanks.

Hello Roydon, seems like the motherboard ECS A785GM-M has some issues with heat sink, which causes it to be over heated. Any other option if we would like to replace the motherboard in the above config, u mentioned Gigabyte which model were you talking abt?
Roydon
,Mumbai, on Mar 03, 2010 05:43 PM
The Gigabyte board is the GA-MA785GMT-US2H but it's a bit pricey. If you want to opt for DDR2 then get the Gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H.

Phenom II X2 555 BE is actually a quad core processor with two cores disabled. You can get them working. Search for the article on Anandtech's website as I'm unable to put a link here.

What kind of nutter are you? You want to game with only 2GB RAM!? Even laptops now come with 3 GB RAM! 4GB RAM is the bare minimum. No need to jump ship to DDR3...You can opt for a DDR2 motherboard...future proof my *$$ there will be just a slight difference in DDR2 800 & DDR3 1333 especially with AMD processors. You can then put in the saved money & update to a 5770 & please where is a sound card? Any sound card is better than the garbage onboard Realtek. Throw in a Audigy value in there as well.
