A guide to build a potent gaming rig

    mail share

    next

The last time we built a high-end gaming rig we went all out and got some of the best components available. This was all fine but come to think of it, 80K is a high price tag that not everyone is willing to shell out. I sure many wouldn't want to spend so much money on a gaming rig. So we decided to build a slightly lower priced high-end rig in which the primary components would remain high-end but we would have to cut down on the other luxuries like a fancy case or expensive speakers.

We set out with a target of 60K (excluding the cost of the OS), which I think is fairly acceptable budget for a high-end gaming rig, and we managed to put together quite a potent little machine that will easily play the current crop of games.

CPU and Motherboard Combo

Intel Core i5 750 - (Rs. 9,700)

It's been long since our last high-end guide and now I'm pretty sure the Corei5 is widely available and can be found easily. In fact we also have the new Clarkdale CPUs like the Corei5 661 that is priced similarly and also has a higher clock speed, but the L2 and L3 cache is a lot less, which makes the i5 750 a better buy.

ECS P55H-A - (Rs. 6,700)

We've again gone for an ECS P55 based chipset since it's priced well and gives you lots of features. This comes from their Black Series line up and features debug LEDs, power and rest buttons built in to the board and CrossFire support.

are you an idiot? Why should you go & pirate Windows? Will you buy cheaply made chinese motherboard for your computer? Guess not then why pirate the most important part that is the OS. If you can't afford windows for the moment install Linux & save up for Windows. The fact that TechTree doesn't mention an OS in their article itself is incredibly shocking to say the least.

sorry to disappoint you Samir, but most computer parts are indeed Chinese

Pirating Win-7 doesn't mean you are using a Chinese replica; it just means you're on a free copy of something you'd otherwise have to pay for. You can't enforce people to care for morals and ethics for something which won't even get you a court hearing. In fact, you don't even have to be clever to be on a pirated copy. M$ would have definitely changed that if they wanted to, but I think they would lose quite a few figures in the "most used OS" battle in developing countries. Anyway, let the company worry about it not going bankrupt, I see nothing wrong in pirating when it's not even a crime(enough to reprimand you).

Hey Roydon, When starting a build, I presume you first decide on the target resolution (I would do so). The rest of the machine is built around this choice. For a 1080p resolution the GTX260 is not the best choice. If you have a decent CPU, at 1080p the GPU is the limiting factor. Your build spends too much money on things that don't translate into any gain in FPS at 1080p. For starters, switching over to an AMD/ATI build would give you better value for Money. Secondly, getting a CM590 would make sense in a multi GPU machine. For a single card setup, it's an overkill. Thirdly, computer gaming in front of a 24" monitor is awkward. It's hard to get a good view of a 24" screen from 2 feet away. 22" is the sweetspot. A better build would be --- AMD Phenom II X4 955BE - Rs.8,250 ; MSI 790GX-G65 - Rs.6,900 ; Corsair 2GB DDR3 x 2 - Rs.5,700 ; Sapphire ATI HD5850 - Rs.15,500 ; 500GB WD Black x 2 RAID-0 - Rs.5,000 ; CoolerMaster CM 310 - Rs.1,550 ; Tagan StoneRock TG600W PSU - Rs.4,200 ; Samsung DVD Writer - Rs.1,100 ; Samsung 2233SW - Rs.9,000 ; Logitech Media KB + MX518 Mouse - Rs.1,900 ; Senheiser HD202 Headphones - Rs.1,300 ; Grand Total == Rs.60,200. A lot of money can still be shaved of this build. This build is clearly not meant for an upgrade. With a mid range PSU CrossFire is not going to happen. With that in mind a 790G Chipset presents no benefit over say, a cheaper 785G chipset except for DDR3. Getting a 785G Chipset and DDR2 RAM could save you about 4K. For those who feel that RAID is an excess you could get just one HDD and save about 2.5K. And finally for those who feel that they are not very inclined to do any sort of overcocking/expansion, the SMPS can further be downgraded to a Tagan TG500 for a savings of 1K (Yes!! a X4-955BE + HD5850 is stable). A total shaving-off of 7.5K. You can perhaps use the money to go get Windows 7 or a few new titles. My pick would be to pick up a Razor gaming mouse and Pad combo. They are pretty slick. So Roydon, wanna race your build against mine ?? :P :D

Yoo people ! Its far better to buy a PS3 or XBOX 360 than a 60k PC. You can spends 20k on a PS3 which has an inbuilt Blue ray player as well, and if really interested then spend the rest 40k on FULL HD LCD TV. That will be a fully entertaining show!! As far as the games are concern the consoles have all of them an you don't have to worry about upgrades for at least 3 years from now!!! CONSOLES ROCK!!

Hey there...a very nice build again...but i believe a one thing wrong there...... the price of the motherboard that you are using is about 9k-10k today...nowhere around 7k....... Also, don't you think that yous should have used an ATI GPU as the mobo is CorssFireX ready, so that we can add another GPU in the future..... None the less....the configs are awesome......gr8 work man..... I just wanted to ask what ATI options do we have that are in the same price range as the GTX 260.....and with the same power.....

,shimla, on Feb 26, 2010 01:51 PM
What about putting XFX ATI Radeon HD 5670 of Rs. 7,500/- (1GB DDR5, Dx11 support) etc.
nik
,mum, on Mar 02, 2010 11:14 AM
A medium to low range card...and the 1GB is OVERKILL. It can't even use the 512 fully forget the 1GB. For a 60k build it is nonsensical!
Talha
,Gkp, on Feb 26, 2010 07:07 PM
2 GB RAM is certainly not enough for a "High-End Gaming PC" even if it is DDR3. A slow hard drive has also been recommended. Very poor article. For 60k you can get better configurations...

@ all : well after reading FULL ARTICLE N ALL COMMENTS .. I will like to say: firstly: YES , The Os price must be included in teh configuration...U know what all these articles among other stuffs increase piracy n illegal OS use.... I insist on original OS n Anti virus.... secondly, Gaming Rig can be made with less money than that..It all depends on what one wants to do from his Beast MMAchine ;) For me 1 TB will be minimum...for some 500GB is more...n mostly ppl buy only CPU and use there present peripherals ... being an engineer n techie i will say...most of the power n processign speed in our home pcs is just wasted due to lack of knowledge.. PROCESSOR IS THE MAIN THING..TRY TO INVEST IN IT heavily.. ppl upgrade other things everytime they need to upgrade..but processor one doesnt change so often...Thirdly I will give emphasis on..spped of pc is not all abt hardware ..its management of yr pc files.n other settings....Page file size.. dividing into partitions n managing big progrmas n games on separate partition other than windows root drive makes pc a hell lot faster...n keeping frequently used files in one partition......n last but not least frequent maintenance tasks like defragmenting n deleting all deep junks...I have pretty old config but its not slow at all...n i m not joking it...i have P4 with HT 3 ghz 2 gb dual channel enabled ram.. 500 + 160 gb harddisk.. nvidia 8600 GTS + viewsonic 21 inch Lcd+ wireless RF syenhiser headphones+ microsoft wirless keybrd kit....I have worked on many latest destops ..n mine neing 4 yrs old...is not at ALL SLOW !!! not joking....

@shamrock You seriously like making a fool out of yourself don't you? Please read I said "cheaply made chinese" I didn't mean all chinese products were bad. This goes to show you stick with your point of not buying Windows. I feel really happy it's coz of idiots like you Microsoft releases Genuine Validation checks. You know what I was against it at first but looking at you I'll install the validation tool. TechTree please update your guide, the fact that your editor passes such an article is beyond me. How can you spend 60k on a computer & not spend 5-6 k on a OS? Ridiculous.

WD Caviar Green 500GB is not a 7200 RPM drive but actually only 5400 RPM... Its not a performance HDD.. WD Caviar Black should be ideally used. Seagate 7200.12 could have been recommended but Seagate reduced warranty from 5 Years to 3 Years so WD Black is better which comes with Full 5 Years warranty albeit at higher cost....

Why r u choosing P55 chipset board instead of H55 r H57
Roydon
,Mumbai, on Feb 26, 2010 04:38 PM
The H55 is only useful if you're using a Corei3 or the new Corei5 6xx series which have lesser cache. The i5 750 is still a better choice and P55 is a solid chipset for it.
