Yesterday we saw some of the best handsets that were launched at Mobile World Congress 2010. Today we'll be looking at some of the new software that was unveiled at the event.

Samsung Bada OS

Bada is a mobile platform developed by Samsung. It was first announced on November 10 2009 and was fully demoed at Mobile World Congress this year on the first handset running it, the Samsung Wave. With Bada, Samsung will be competing with the likes of Microsoft's Windows Mobile and Google's Android platforms.

Visually Bada is a lot similar to Samsung's other non-smartphones, and that's because it has the same TouchWiz interface as them. However, with Bada, developers will be able to write their own apps for the platform through the SDK that Samsung is giving out for Bada.

The interface bears a lot of similarity to Samsung's older TouchWiz phones, but at the same time also has some similarities with the interface design of Android and iPhone OS. There are multiple home screens and you can add and remove them as you please. Widgets are available as before and they have now been placed in a tray at the bottom of the screen. The phone comes with a handful of widgets and you can install more as well.

Pressing the menu buttons brings up the main applications screen, where all your applications are presented in a grid. The presentation reminds of the iPhone way of displaying its applications; in multiple screens and you move through them by swiping them horizontally. Application icons can be rearranged by pressing and holding on them.

Bada also features a very Android-like notifications tray, accessed by sliding it down from the top. Here you can manage all the phone's notifications, as well as quickly activate or deactivate features like Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, something Android does not have.
