Did a sleazy seduction scene in the game lead to the ban?
Quantic Dream's upcoming film noir themed game for PS3, Heavy Rain, has been banned by United Arab Emirates' National Media Council (NMC) for unknown reasons. Middle Easter Gamers site reported that even though there are no specific reasons for this ban, 'a sultry seduction scene' in the game could have triggered it. Heavy Rain is the second game that got banned in UAE after Electronic Arts' Darksider.
Heavy Rain is expected to hit U.S. stores today and is exclusive to Sony PlayStation 3 console. After the Darksiders got banned, Electronic Arts decided not to release Dante's Inferno in UAE.
Following the MEGamers' report, Sony released following statement when Kotaku inquired with it:
The UAE's National Media Council (NMC) has banned Heavy Rain on PlayStation3. Heavy Rain has an 18+ PEGI rating and has been conceived from the earliest stages as a genuinely adult experience. This means that it deals with strong content including blood and nudity, but treats this content in a mature and sensitive manner. The game is not intentionally controversial or sensationalist, and all the themes and content are consistent with what consumers would expect to see in a mainstream Hollywood thriller.
Even though the ban over such games will persist, these games will continue selling in UAE through gray market channels.
