After the metro cities of Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata went 3G, it was the turn of Bangalore to get its first commercial 3G services last Friday.

BSNL formally announced the launch of 3G in the garden city and with it bought high speed data access while on the move to netizens and cellular subscribers across the city. As of now, this would be a "basic" 3G service with just the high speed data access. BSNL has planned services like video on demand, games on demand, music, m-commerce, multimedia, telemedicine, education and e-governance. These would be unveiled in due course as the 3G user base increases.

As of now, 430 sites in Bangalore are 3G ready. BSNL plans to increase that number to 643 sites in the next few months. In other news, Union Minister for IT and Communication A. Raja has said that MNP (Mobile Number Portability) too would be introduced in the Bangalore and Chennai telecom circles starting May 2010. If you happen to be a Bangalorean using a BSNL 3G connection, do share your thoughts on the actual user experience of the service!

MNP delayed again citing security reasons. Smaller countries are embracing LTE(4G) fast and we are still struggling for 3G. This shows how incompatible Our Govt. and System is. We need some Dynamic Leaders.

3G services from BSNL have been rolled out in Orissa as well, I get net speeds of upto 3 Mbps on my mobile in Paradeep, Orissa (which is just a small industrial town/port) though it shows that I have been connected to the internet at 115.2kbps which is for 2G. Maybe BSNL hasn't yet realized that it has launched it services in other places as well.

How come BSNL is getting 3g rollout access while private parties are being forced to wait for "Clearance" from Defense? This looks like a ploy to get BSNL advance access to market before private players hop in!!

The "Clearance" from defense came a long time ago - the spectrum allocated to BSNL is reserved and is not part of the auction. The private players would buy the bandwidth in this auction.
